hey guys what i am trying to find out is weather i have a six or seven bolt and if its a 1g or 2g engine (same thing) my cars an evo 1.. im getting more and more confused the more i read up about it..

thanks ben

The only real definite way to tell if you're really-really-really (haha- ZOOLANDER) unsure is to get your gearbox and clutch off - look at your flywheel and count how many bolts are holding it to the crank.

Other than that - you just have to assume if it's the original EVO1 engine that's in your car then it's a 7-bolt.

ive only been on this forum for like 6 months or something and ive already seen about 10 topics on 6 or 7 bolt shiz lol

Same here, i think its a 7bolts unless your evo have some wierd motor in it. The best way to make sure is to check your fly wheel when you change the clutch (if its going to run out soon) ... good luck with it

it could be a gsr with converted to evo-spec interior/exterior, but the motor out of a vr4. in that case its a 6-bolt.

thanks guys iv done alot of reading up i was just getting comfused with all the dates that things wher changed around and what not...

Does the Evo block have the bolt holes for the front roll stopper like the VR4 does?
It's the one directly under the turbo. The evo mount is on the gearbox isn't it?

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but is there any way to hint weather the motor is a 6 or 7 bolt? without pulling the gearbox/clutch out? The 6 bolts are from the vr4's and have cyclone on the intake plenum yes?

I'm about to replace the clutch and put a lightened flywheel in. Obviously I want to have the right combo ordered in.

The previous owner of my car told me that the engine is from an Evo3, making it the 7 bolt, but I'm not confident on he's technical knowledge(he bought it with the conversion done already).

Correct, all VR4 engines are 6 bolt, hence they will have the cyclone inlet plenum...but that doesnt neccesarilly mean someone couldnt have changed the plenum either.
I guess you could have a quick look at the oil filter housing to confirm if its VR4 or Evo III, ive got a photo of an Evo III oil filter housing, ill put it up.

Here below is an Evo III oil filter housing and what it should look like, a VR4 one is different.

you can tell by the engine mounts also. 7-bolts have them on the gearbox, where as 6-bolts have them on the crossmember (IIRC)

With the part interchangability between the 6 and 7 bolt engines you can have any combination of parts that can work together mixed between VR4 and EVO. Sadly the only way to really tell is to look at the number of flywheel bolts on the crank... or easier yet, drop the sump off and look at the design of the crankshaft cradle/main bearing caps - dead giveaway and not too hard to do :)
