Hey guys.

I own a 1993 CD5A gsr and Recently I've noticed that its backfiring when i shift between 1st and 2nd and occaisionally in between other gears. I don't terribly mind it but have been old by a friend that its not a good thing at all.

Also at times theres a VERY strong smell of petrol in the exhaust gas...

The only mods it has is a monza bov, poddy, a big front mount and a small bore on the end of the factory exhaust.

Can anybody tell me whats causing the backfire and the petrol smell? I know poddys make cars rich but this is stronger than all of my previous cars.

Cheers

go a full exhaust, cant remember what my exhaust shop said but they reckon that made my old supra back fire, but i liked it like that, it might eff the baffles but who needs baffles any way,

i was thinkin maybe the smell is just it running rich, turbs always run rich an lean out under boost dont they, what cars are you comparing the smell to??

petrol smell: check fuel lines around fuel tank.
Definitely. You might have a tiny leak in a fuel hose or something which is causing the smell.
How bad is the smell though? Is it a strong petrol smell inside the cabin?
Running rich and backfiring is pretty normal, all depending how much its happening.
What's your fuel economy like?
You may just be in need of a tune.

If you have an atmo bov, you meter all the air that your engine is assuming it's going to get, then you close the throttle, and your bov dumps all the air, and all the fuel goes into the engine.

If it's an atmo BOV, it may be leaking whilst you are making boost too (again overfueling the engine) try returning to a factory bov, and as everyone else has said, check for leaks

^yep I agree...Its the atmo BOV for sure! The backire is caused by all the excess fuel-dumped in there when you back off- in the exhaust igniting and going bang!! I dont mind it actually...especially on a dark street at night!!!

Wouldnt be too concerned by it..most do it, in some shape or form...

hay bud just check your exhaust system it might have a small leak you usally get that noise when you have a small leak in your exhaust on decell it sucks in air and bang when it mixes with raw fuel.

Cheers guys for all the help. Have had a play with the bov and it turns out the old owner who said he was a mechanic etc had the bov so tight it mde it sound ssq when in fact it was just surging insanely. Have since opened it up a bit more and much less surge but any looser and it hangs on the verge of stalling after a rev.

It could be the exhaust as have recently had a bore welded on so could be crap welding. I think i might need to go over all my intercooler piping etc to make sure its all tight, replaced the fuel filter and since then has smelt stronger. Have checked the filter and it isnt leaking so could be perhaps the engine is getting more fuel now and along with the bore is causing this?Would an ecu reset help make the ecu 'learn' to run less rich?
What is the proper way to reset the ecu for my gsr? Only know the old school disconnect the battery and leave it for 24 hours
