I spent some more time last night working on the EVO and removed the intake pipe from the AFM (air flow meter) to the front compressor housing on the turbo to find it was full of crap.

Now I have a couple of really simple questions ;)

The Pod filter has been cleaned previously so I'm not worried about that but the following will need to be cleaned....

1 - AFM (Air Flow Meter). Mine is full of crap but I'm hesitant to spray anything through it and upset the sensor. After owning a GTO I know how easy these things are to bugger up. Am I able to remove the electronics from the AFM and give the unit a really good clean up?

2 - Compressor side of the Turbo . All the oil/dirt/dust as shown above from the intake pipes is all caked on the actually compressor housing and front wheel on the turbo. When the intake pipe was off you can actually see where someone had tried to wipe out the dust/oil off the inside of the compressor housing but there is that much caked on there it was not done very well.

Now how the fark do I clean this properly without removing the turbo?? I had one thought of running the AFM straight off the throttle body so I can get the car to idle and simply pull the intercooler pipes off and just spray a carby / injector cleaner in the front of the turbo until it's all clean.

What do you think?

hhhhmmm with the turbo part maybe you could use a air compresser and clean it that way, but im not to keen on spraying it back into the turbo.

A compressor won't work as it's actually hard to wipe off with my finger. I think it will need some sort of degreaser as such to clean it up.

Honestly if this turbo has to come off it will not be going back on.

Oh I should also note that I will be fitting a catch can to help stop any further oil being thrown down the inlet pipes. The oil level was still perfect from when I checked it after my trip to the drags.

putting the afm onto the throttle body seems the go to me......but I wouldnt be spraying the compressor wheel with the engine running. spray it with degreaser and let it soak for a while.....run it briefly to throw the liquid off......then spray with carby cleaner or some acrylic thinners.
repeat till clean.
please keep in mind the risk of fire as these liquids are highly volatile and you are close to the exhaust so do it when the exhaust is cold

Ive seen this done quite a few times on trucks......and it works a treat.

The MAF (Karmen Votex type on Mitsubishis) does not like being placed anywhere after the turbo. They are not designed to withstand pressure, and they also give poor readings with compressed air and substantially different air temps.

He's talking about doing this so he can leave the car idling whilst having access to the compressor side of the turbo.

I've always used medical cleaners like a ear bud cleaner spray on to bud and wipe, I use a lighter and heat up the end of an ear bud and bend the stick so you can clean from behind the sensor.

As for the Truck styles :rolleyes:I'd leave that to trucks:rolleyes:

If you do want to clean your turbo ring Mark Boxsell GTPumps.com.au 4 sound advise.

Don't use contact cleaner on your air flow meter as it leaves an oily residue behind that messes up the sensor, it's good stuff to use on like window switches tho!
You can run the car with the AFM disconected it will run like shit but it will run, just disconnect the battery for a little while afterwards to reset the ECU after you have plugged it all back together,
"Brake Cleaner" comes in a spray can @ about $10-20 & is essentially just dry cleaning fluid so dries leaving no residue but is great stuff for softening grease etc. I think removing the cover of the turbo would be best so you don't damage the blades while your in there with your fingers/rags/etc.

as far as i know contact cleaner does not leave a residue and thats why it is specifically for electronics, simply spray it on and it evaporates...

i also have a GTi swift and it is recommended that you use contact cleaner for the afm hot wire in that.
