Advice on removing rounded bolt...

Hi guys,

Need some advice on how to open tigh bolts. I managed to rounded off the oil in bolt for the gearbox today, but not completely... What can be done? I was thinking of using some freeze penetration on it? :unsure:

LOL! I can see may swear words coming.


Could try freeze spray, oxy, butane soldering iron, WD40.

I would hammer bash the next size down imperial multi-point socket on to then kick it off.


Which one did you round, the filler or the drain?


I have quite a few spares of them if you want a replacement.

single hex socket works best.....and pretty cheap at repco.

It is the filler bolt, is not an easy task to unscrew the thing ahhhhhhhhhhh <_<

go with the single hex, there are also sockets that grip when your undoing nuts and bolts. cant remember what theyre called.

I had something like that happen to me on an oil fill bolt on a gearbox once. No matter all the tools I threw at it the bitch wouldnt come off and was rounded off by the previous owner.
I welded another bolt to it, fixed it up quick smart :lol: the heat did it actually considering the gearboxes are alloy, it didnt take much to loosen it once the secondary bolt was welded onto the rounded one.

=o thats a good idea to weld another bolt. has any one tried the deep freeze from repco? I dont know why all the damn oil in and out bolt are so tighthen up!

Not sure on the deep freeze but I have used a little butane torch to locally heat the area - seems to work most of the time - and vice grips are your friend if you have rounded the hell out of it - or file it down to suit a smaller six sided socket

exact thing happened to me, tried everything and it wouldnt budge, ended up having to get a thread docter guy out to pull it for me. He had some socket that had sharp little barbs on it so it cut in and gripped as it turned

like that one, maybe try source one of these bad boys, didnt take much with that

try a pair of mini stillsons or commonly called a pipe wrench. totally adjustable and about 6bucks for the cheap ass ones from bunnings with all the other cheap ass stuff. Presuming the head of the filler bolt is still protruding.
