Alternator dies

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

Ive just done this also....lol

but I rewired the altinator loom and relised that a pwr steer pump wire was missing also, which is now there, thanks to my spare jspec loom

with the tension of the belts, you should only should be able to twist the belt 90 degrees no more no less

It's the one that lights up your battery warning light on the dash I think. At least, that's what happens in my car if it's not connected.

Does it have a socket in the alternator assemply that it plugs into (ie specific location) or does it have to be "attached" to a bolt tht comes out?

on my commodore the alternator had 3 bolts that stuck out the back and sometime you had to use a ring crimp on the wire and wedge that between two nuts on the bolt to get the conection... is it that sought of conection on the lancers? \

p.s. photo would be really great if someone has a unit lying around

I'll take a photo tomorrow when I get stuck back into my car.

I just pulled the ECU out and found 4/6 cap's had serious burn marks on them (AKA ecu was about to fry itself). But busy getting that repaired for all of $20 atm instead of replacing an ecu (EXPENSIVE!@#!).

protip: refit the heat shield that goes around your exhaust housing/dump pipe, usually these get taken off/thrown away when the exhaust is upgraded - without it life gets pretty warm for the regulator built into the alternator.

well i got it out after plenty of c*nting around yesterday lol (i took Aust. Day off) - but i can imagin it will all go back together much simpler now that i know what I am doing.

It is rewarding having some small successes, so i am keen to get it back and refit everything tonight & over the weekend.
Hopefully the belts wont prove too much for me.

Ent - i took your advice & got new ones too :)

with the tensioner, i seem to have completely unbolted it too, both bolts:lol:

re: wires on alternator, I had a big black plug, and another one which was locked on with a nut under a rubber cap & there was a 3rd one i think.
and only one black clipped wire on the PS pump.

Put the tensioner back on BEFORE you put the fucker in. Otherwise you'll hate your life and lose a bunch of skin off your right hand.

Just make sure all the wires go back where you found them

update: well we have Winner!

I successfully refitted the alternator & power steering pump c/w new belts
all in all it went pretty well, i did have a slight issue getting PS pump to line up, i got the belt on no worries, but then couldnt get leftside bolt in as the pump was angled. however a bit over jiggling and the PS pump droppped into place allowing me to adjust it correctly.
ran it, re-checked belts, all good!
runs nice & quiet now too  and the new plugs feel like they are much better than the sad, burnt out ones I removed.
While I was at it I boggied up the K & N onto the MAF without the paintcan lid finally, so more 'whoosh'ing noise hooray lol

Have to say I am proud of my small achievement.
I tend to agonise over touching my car in fear of not being able to put it all back together again, or jst plain F*ck it up!
So +1 for me & my confidence and importantly +1 for your help guys, thanks heaps! :)
