im about 175cm and around 80-85kg, only 21 though :D

too easy... i was just trying to find out if you were a fat farker, skinny wiener, or somewhere in the middle...

its too hard to say if you should be eating more meat... meats are good, especially fish, chicken, lean cuts of meat, but you definatly shouldnt be substituting a steak (meal) for a shake... you definatly want a good combination of the two!

so you're only trying to slim down a little, whilst harden the muscle that you have right..?

As previously stated....if you want to increase bulk, heavy weights & less repetitions is the go....if you want to tone, lighter weights & more repetitions should be your goal. Creatine can also be a good supplement for increasing bulk...as well as protein & carbohydrates....

Work out 3 times a week and in a few months you will see improvements and these initial gains should help you keep motivated - any less, and your basically wasting your time if you wish want to gain any strength; Commitment is the key.

I joined a gym for a year and only lasted 3 months and I hated it, but each to their own!!! I do suggest though if your serious.....spend a little extra $$$ and get yourself a personal trainer who can set yourself a training routine, help motivate you and ensure that you are lifting correctly.

Unfortunately, one of the downsides of weightlifting is....once you build mass and you slacken off, it can only go south...AKA man boobs & tuck shop lady arms.....

All of this inconjunction with good sleep, a balanced diet and with the combination of aerobic & anaerobic exercise...and you shouldn't go wrong.

LOL tuck shop arms LOL.

I would suggest to keep your cardio/swimming routine and add in 3 days of medium weights.

Start off light, ie. Start with 30kg on bench, yes, might feel REALLY light, but, if you go heavy, you WILL tear muscles and you will be out fo action for a week or two.

Do that for a week. Add a bit more weight ie, to 40kg, do that for a week. if that is to light, add another 10kg and so on.. You want to get say 3 sets of 10 - 15 on those weights.

If you were bulking. then i would say 3 sets of 6 - 8.

Curls, start on say 6kg an arm, go to 7.5 and so forth so you get to a point where on your third set you are REALLY feeling the pump (Skin tight across your muscles) heading towards the 10.

What gym do you plan on joining and are you going with friends or yourself? If i were to recommend a gym, i wouldnt recommend a boutique gym ie, fitness first, equilibrium etc. You want to train, you train with like minded people, Nitro gym is great, maxs in dandenong etc.

most of my friends are eastsiders and i'm a westsider, so i will be most likely be doing gym alone.

i attend swinburne uni, so i might sign up to the one around there, glenferrie is it? not quite sure, but they usually do have a students discount start of the year.

Be careful with creatine... I think there have been some studies that have shown it can lead to liver (or maybe it was kidney) problems. That might have been after long term use, I'm not sure.

I used to be on it aswell as protein powder. Creatine is great for getting massive, but as soon as you get off it (or can't afford it anymore), you literally deflate.

Protein powder will be better than bars if you have to choose between the two. Protein bars tend to have about 5g of fat in them, so if you go with powder and mix it with water (not milk) you can avoid the fat. It tastes pretty rank though!

probable because you would have been on a creatine monohydrate (absorbed in to the body through water) or a creatine ester (absorbed in to the body via alcohol) which will make the muscles retain water... hence why you appear to be larger while taking the supplement. there is a new type of creatine on the market which is absorbed through a glycogen cell, and thus your body will retain far less water if any... thats right, get ripped and be on creatine at the same time!

haha... yep some sure do... but after a while you find the brands / flavours that are good in both delivering protein and taste decent enough. first trick would be to go for the fruit flavours over the 'milky' ones eg. pick tropical over chocolate. but he is dead right... you want to be taking an after workout protein with water only within 30 minutes of your workout. one of the best proteins on the market would be optimum nutrition (whey protein)... tastes great, mixes well and is 100% WPI... but if you just have a short chat with anyone in a nutrition shop they will be able to tell you what they rate for taste, mixing and protein... remember most of them actually have uni degrees or a massive interest in training

olly, as you are not trying o become the incredible hulk, you will only need to take a protein power... you shouldnt need any other supplements. i feel that the best advice for you is to join up at a gym, and start lifting weights, and see where that gets you...

my theory:

I do the whole bulk up through the year, and then lean down in summer thing... i have been doing it for a couple of years now, trying new things, seeing what works for me... finding out what doesnt... and id have to say that the only thing that has stayed constant every time that i have done it is that the only way you will improve the body is by putting in more effort... so you want to try and do this without burning yourself out... you want to make the weight loss sustainable... eg. when doing the whole lean up deal... my first week of cardio 3 x 20 minutes sessions, the next 3 x 25 and so forth... dont start of doing the most you can do because you will only burn yourself out...

dont touch creatine, really bad for you.
protein's not really good for you either but if u're willing u'll see great results with protein shakes.
u dont realy need any suppliments, ill speak for myself to say i've seen great results without any suppliments, but they do help, each to their own,
i think u need to bulk up a bit.. hit it hard for a couple weeks, see how u feel, the first week or so u will kane!! but after that u'll see results.
u're already doing alot of cardio so you're relatively fit, maybe bump that up a little bit and that acts as a toner in itself. That way u're geting a bit bigger and toning at the same time.
diet is very important too.. but if u luv ure food like me, u wont worry too much about it

Dean

are you saying you can lose fat at the same time as put on muscle :)

I was always under the impression that.

a) Body can either be in an anabolic state (Put on weight) OR a Catabolic state (Lose Weight) .. You can not do both at once :)

With heavy weight training and good eating, you willl ALWAYS put on some fat, fact is, muscle burns more easily than fat. With lots of cardio you will start to lose size if you are only doing cardio.

Protein Helps with muscle repair as muscle is mainly protein. Creatine is naturally produced in the body, just taking some thing like monohydrate will load you up.. I take creatine when i hit a wall and want to get past it. 3 - 4 weeks and you can move on.

Protein is not bad for you. But like anything. if you were on a protein only diet then yes, it will be bad, you still need your carbs, fats, sugars etc.

no,
im saying that a mixture of building muscle and doing cardio in between gym sessions is exactly what he needs. since he wants to tone a bit but bulk a little bit aswell.
Protein is not bad for you. But like anything. if you were on a protein only diet then yes, it will be bad, you still need your carbs, fats, sugars etc.
exactly, protein shakes and the like are designed to pack in the protein into you're body, giving u more protein than anything else.
u can use it, it will help u and u'll see results quicker but u dont need it is what im tryna say,.

you would be pretty silly to not use a protein suppliment in this day and age... even if you are only doing light training...

and even with a 'protein only' diet you will still be getting sufficient carbs and fats...

well i'll b ure living example that u can do it
i've bulked up quite a bit in the last 4-5 months with no suppliments.
it can b done

LOL protein only diet usually means, very low carb, usually not enough on a daily basis.

But a good healthy diet, i would suppliment protein regardless, add some mild weights to his current regime and he will be rocking.
