I just had my Evo repaired at a workshop. The head was removed & serviced and some parts were replaced including the pistons since a couple of them were cracked and the broken bits were causing a knock.

I don't really want to disturb the owner's livelihood but I do feel the need to share this experience with all of you, and you can also share your opinions with us.

To cut it short, after a couple of weeks & several concerns which I would rather not mention publicly, they put the engine back together and started it. To my great surprise, the knock was still there and the owner blamed me for not getting him to replace all the valves (he got the head checked, serviced and 4 bent valves replaced). He wanted $450 extra to disassemble it again and find out what was really causing it. I agreed and waited there while the head was being removed.

After the head was taken off, I saw a small piston bit still sitting on one of the pistons which was causing the knock. It was then clear to me that the parts were not cleaned and checked thoroughly before they were put together. Anyway, the parts were then cleaned and assembled again. This time the engine ran fine but the turbo didn't work properly. I may be wrong but as far I know the turbo was working fine when I got the car towed to him.

In the end, I didn't want to make a fuss about the turbo (the owner offered me a replacement turbo for $1650 + labour which I refused), but expressed my concern to the owner and I asked him to share some responsibility for the fact that the parts were not cleaned & checked well. I felt that I shouldn't have to pay him any extra at all for him missing that bit in the cleaning process, but since I didn't want anymore hassles I offered him $300 instead. He refused and he started saying he had lots of overheads and things to pay too. Anyway, we settled it for $400 extra on top of the $2500 that I already paid him. To me it's like a surgeon forgetting a knife in your internals and then charging you extra for retrieving it.

I drove away that night almost $3000 out of a pocket in an Evo with a broken turbo, feeling stupid.

What do you think?

Thanks.

that sucks, and highlights the importance of finding a good workshop that stands by their workmanship,i can understand why the guy ended up paying extra even though he shouldnt have, sometimes its just easier to get the car back on the road and then try and sort it out

quite a hard situation to be in though.

I bet a piece of piston went fru the zorst valves and hit the turbo blades and stuffed it up some how, but if iw as him i wouldnt have given hime the $300, cos he didnt need to cos they had to take off the ehad ro see whats wrong and it was the mechanics fualt it was fouled up with piston bits, i wouldve taken the turbo deal aswell.

What the hell was he thinking, not accepting the turbo.

Might have something to do with him just having spent $2900 and not wanting to spend another $1650 on top right there and then.

read the posts! who else in sydney claims to be the worlds best tuners of the factory vr4 ecu?

its funny how youve brought this 'workshop' to everyones attention.

but there are workshops here in Melbourne, which have fucked many people over on this forum, yet you back them up.

As i said before, interesting post.

man i feel for that guy.

if someone fkd my car up the workshop that fkd it would eventually close down if i had anything to do with it.

like if they unintentionally do it fair enough but dont be putting the blame on others.

just apologise n get it done.

ppl understand that we are all only human and mistakes can happen.

can someone please clear something up for me...

what did he spend the first $2500 on...?

i see reading isnt many ppls forte....

WOW!!, such a big fuss over something that may have never happened.
(who really knows?)
Whatever happened and whoever was involved, I am sure they can sort it out between themselves,(or with the relevant industy governing bodies)
Too many people like to think that they can destroy a business by carrying on all high and mighty on the forums.
One guy even lost his job over it (apparently).
Just goes to show you have to be careful what you say (speaking up on the forums is a bit different to a private conversation).
Its one thing to have an opinion but you have to think about wether you have the facts straight before you go running your mouth off, or you can make yourself look like an idiot.

I am sure that every workshop has had some bad dealings with some nutcase customer...but if we shut them all down, who will repair the cars?

JSTYLE will find that if he wants to get anywhere in sales, he needs friends in the business.(who wants to be friends with a guy that stirs sh#t all the time)
On the same token what business would want that kind of character representing them.(your personal views are now to be percieved as the professional views of the company that you represent.)

everyone understands shyte happens.

but if its the fault of the mechanic the customer shouldnt be made to pay for it.

the turbo thing well that could have been caused by the owner...so i wont comment on that.

hence y im gonna miss having my golf as my mechanic for it has never let anyone down.

looks after his customers and does everything properly.

theres a lot of dodgy workshops out there though.

but if u find a good one then stay.

there's only three people in NSW that i would let near My Lib and with over75 years expeirence between them with Turbo'd Mitsu's yes I'll only go to them EVER. as you said when you find a great one stick to them and support them 100%
In regards to bringing workshops down in posts I have the opinion that I spend most times seeing tottal tripe being posted on forums and getting into defend them from Keyboard warriors.
