Big brake conversion

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

you know getting the brembo conversion is not as easy as i through it would be... but it's all about the bragging rights...hahah

no seriously i do have big plans for my EVO 1, unlike most ppl, i like to build my suspension first, as it is important when i track this car with a 400-500hps engine in it.

I happen to call my friend up in Japan, and they told me they can get their hands on some used EVO parts.

So my next question is... if i get EVO5 hub asssembily F/R will it help with my conversion.

thanks in advance

That may be so Scott, but Shayne will make up for it in driving skill and speed through the corners lol :p . Yeah I have to agree, big Brembo brakes and rotors is a big wank factor and its one thing we all wouldnt mind being called a 'wanker' about - they look and brake awesome.

It would be nice if we all could afford it, but a dodgey Brembo conversion is definitely not something we should be sacrificing safety over.

Suffer in ya jocks Rob lol :p

Depends what you want to use the car for, I have the rear lift issue that you mention Richard on certain parts of my local track but have dealt with it by bias adjustment......Shayne it may be cool:cool: but as you are also tracking your car-I wager you any amount that my car will outbrake yours on the track with its uber cool stoppers lol:p:p

How do you see it bang for buck?

How much did your conversion cost and would you have gone faster if you applied the cash to a different part of the car?

I've done the Brembo front conversion (yes, a big part of that was for 'wank' factor, but they DO look SOOOO cool ) and I have to admit for the $$$ spent (and I mean more than I anticipated once you have to buy a whole new set of wheels which will clear the bloody things) I probably could have gone for a decent aftermarket ECU and tune which would have made the car faster and more potent on the track.

And I haven't even looked into converting the rears yet....

As I said before, the standard E3 calipers and discs with a good set of pads worked fine time and time again on numerous circuit runs at Sandown (a very heavy braking track) so IMO there's no real performance based need to do the upgrade.

you will notice a difference in fade out on a track like winton for example shayne-sandown does have some hard braking but in most cases there is time for the brakes to cool a little in between

If you need some brembos and discs, I have a spare set in my garage. I couldn't be f#cked doing the conversion. The discs are blancs because I was going to go 4 stud but finding wheels to fit is a bastard..

One of the sure fire ways to do the conversion is to only use stock mitsu parts already made(later model evo's) to fit in the right combo(on gsr e1-3's), doing the conversion of late model evo brakes on stock gsr e1-3 parts is a nightmare, also new rims are always a definate, if you dont have them already to clear with all of the right offsets.

When doing these types of conversions the least that is custom or modified to run the new brake set up the better.

Then last but not least guard clearance lol

and what will they be exactly?

"Water cooler AP 6pots" Bob has a set on his ex Jap WRC works Grp A EIII they are a piece of artwork water coolers and pumps to keep the brake cool ;)

The attraction of the Brembos for me is the fact that my MKII setup in the Mirage will be close to exceeding 400kw atw. I'm just not sure if I can trust the twinpots at that level for sprints and hillclimbs. I'm going to the expense of the rears as I think the Evo I-III setup is underbraked in the rear as it is, let alone screwing the balance up by doubling the piston count up front. Also the Brembo caliper is much stiffer adding to braking feel - nothing like a high and hard pedal that you can mash hard as hell without locking up. The bling value is of no concenquence to me. I'm having the ricer red paint stripped off and having them HPC coated in satin black. Red calipers (even if they're factory red) are awful in my opinion.

A good deal of custom work is required for the rear. You need to convert to the internal drum handbrake setup from the Evo IV and up, not to mention the uber expensive CNC machined alloy brackets Dirk designed in Solidworks and had made for me.
