Blown Head Gasket....Yes/No/Ideas :)

Help Support 4GTuner:

Hylomar or copper spray is an option people can take if they are fitting headgaskets or other gaskets where a good seal is required. Hylomar has become the new alternative to copper spray and is considered better. Some people prefer to use a light spray of these aides and others dont prefer to spray anything at all. It comes down to your engine builder's personal preference. Do some reading up on it and make your own informed decision.

You've got an MLS gasket though Tim.

I forgot to ask one more question, the head I'm now gonna use doesn't have any rockers etc.
Can I use the rockers and camshafts from the old head on this other one? The cams caps are still the original ones.

Rob, I didn't measure the cylinder head bolts. Do you know how long they should be? Also, I didn't want to turn the motor over fearing I would hydro-lock the engine or something. Also, it had been sitting for 6 or so months untouched.

Cheers guys. :)

its possibly caused a lead too melt and give no spark! my cb gsr did it its

but yer id definetly replace the headbolts added security. i thought that they were torque to yield.

and ACL Hylomar is excellent stuff for sealing headgaskets

7 bolt ones are tty, not 6 bolt ones, i re used them on my ggsr n/a as they were in spec stretch wise

I couldnt see anything on the nominal Head Bolt length ..i have seen something, but dont remeber where, maybe they arent torque to yield, Ring mitsubishi.Replace them anyway!

Also, found this
Apparently torque is 110 Nm
I do remember something about going to 95 Nm then to 0 then to full torque...the manual says nothing about it though...Maybe this is to seat it?

The 1998 Boyces manual just says tighten in 2-3 even steps also...and quotes a torque of 90-100 Nm.
Id be going 110 Nm

Literaly start by nipping the bolts up in that sequence below, then get tighter each time following the sequence.

Make sure you apply the same force to each bolt, each time.

Even do something like this...
First Run-50Nm
Second Run-80Nm
Third Run-110Nm
When are you doing this? I should come up for a peek.

PS-This is all 1G info, which is 6 Bolt, perhaps what mattrat is saying is true, as it doesnt mention nominal head bolt lengths...maybe it is only the 7 Bolts that are torque to yield. Ring Mitsi to confirm.

CYLINDER HEAD BOLT INSTALLATION

(1) Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown.

Each bolt should be tightened in two to three steps,
torquing progressively

Heeeeere we go....I did a little more file digging!

56. INSTALLATION OF CYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY
<Up to 1992 models>
(1) Use a scraper to clean the gasket surface of the cylinder
head assembly.
Caution
Take care that no foreign material gets into the
coolant passages or oil passages.
(2) Using the special tool and a torque wrench, tighten the
bolts to the specified torque in the order shown in the
figure. (in two or three cycles.)
Caution
Install the head bolt
washers as shown in the
diagram.

< 1993 models>
(1) Use a scraper to clean the gasket surface of the cylinder head assembly.
Caution
Take care that no foreign material gets into the
coolant passages or oil passages.
(2) When installing the cylinder head bolts, check that the
shank length of each bolt meets the limit. If the limit is
exceeded, replace the bolt.

Limit: Max. 99.4 mm (3.91 in.)

(3) Apply engine oil to the threaded part of the bolt and the
washer.

(4) According to the tightening sequence, tighten the bolts
to the specified torque 80 Nm (58 ftlbs.).
(5) Loosen bolts completely.
(6) Torque bolts to 20 Nm (14.5 ftlbs.).
(7) Tighten bolts l/4 turns (90”) more.
(8) Tighten bolts l/4 turns (90”) additionally.

Notice how It says for the <Up to 1992 models> nothing about head bolt lengths.......and the whole torque then back off thing and retorque i mentioned, its only post 93 models by the look of it.
And in the <1993 models>... it talks about nominal bolt length of 99.4mm..that would lead me to beleive that they are talking about a 7 bolt engine.

That would also lead me to beleive that Mattrat is right
I really should go to bed now...!
PS-The pic below for the Head bolt Washers is 1G, you should have these..make sure theyre put in as per the pic.
