building a forged 4g93T .....it begins now

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

the guy who did your last work and didnt spray the crank it with anything to stop corrosion didnt do it did he ?

did you get some other place to do the head or was it done at the same time ?

different place did the head.....3 new valves too...but I am betting he didnt check the guides

Urgh . . . that sucks man hey , especially when you expect that as part of a head service they would actually service the head properly . checking the valve guides is important . i spat a timing belt one time and bent the valves when they said hello to the pistons half way down willowback drag strip . i stripped the head and removed the bent valves before i put it into the machine shop and the guy who did my head knew nothing about what happened but he found the bent guides when he gave the head a good once over . . . even tho i forgot to tell him cos i dropped it off in a hurry when i was running late

Your guy should have done the same , i would be pissed as well ! .

Is it more of a pinging noise Brian? My Mrs old 4G93P used to make the noise when tapping the throttle or accelerating lightly too. Double check your ignition timing to make sure all is OK, then see if the knock sensor is functioning. If its picking up excessive knocks it should be retarding the timing.

it is a rattle....tacky tacky noise ...like piston slap or worn little ends.

but it goes away with in second of the revs picking up.

just learned about how much oil can be squirted out if you run one of these with the cam cover off!!!!:blink::blink:......LOTS :(

it is pissing me off.....but funny thing was when the cam cover was off I would have expected the noise to be louder. It wasnt so i will have a look at the belt side in the morning

Injector pulse ticking lol

Put your finger on an injector and see if you can feel anything when it ticks :p

nah only the little electric shock :p:p....Ive been had before .

It is a strange noise.....almost like a diesel noise. I would take a video but have no idea how to get that to work on here.

It isnt there if you hold it at say 3k and blip the throttle a bit.....but at 1500 it it's really loud. Kindof GGGGRRRRRat and then gone

If it hadn't just been meticulously built I would say.....gudgeon knock

What did you end up doing for an oil pump Brian? Do you have a gauge connected to check pressure?

What did you end up doing for an oil pump Brian? Do you have a gauge connected to check pressure?

I looked around at "high volume" pumps and read a few disappointed reports about them being the same as a stock pump. So I went searching through my "stuff" and found a stocker virtually unmarked pump. clean as a whistle so gave that a good once over and used it.

haven't used a gauge to check pressure....on the list for tomorrow. Just waited till the light went off and checked there was oil in the turbo drain pipe before start up.

I have a gauge so will take out the sender unit and whack that in.

well after doing some work with replacing lifters....16 new ones to rule them out as the culprit of the noise.

I ended up taking the head off and inspecting very closely the the " JUST RECONDITIONED HEAD"

valve tip heights wrong! 11 stuff lifters that did 300 kms.......and yes they were bled before install.

5 valve guides with excess wear and to top it all off.....one cracked guide.

so I have purchase a new casting from nasons.....

MESSAGE TO ALL.....do not use alltorque heads in bibra lake.....you dont get quality work

I did engine work for over 4 years and I used to see this all the time coming from other reconditioners

Used to see some very dodgy stuff from other people

That's the reason on my cars 95% of the work is done by me

new head is om and the engine has done 825 kms now......still rattles like a diesel. just cant find what is rattling :(

while the head was off I checked all the piston heights......and they are with .003 of a mm on a dial gauge..

there is a lot of visual piston movement at the top of the bore but it is withing spec when using a feeler gauge to check.....11 thou

the rattling is only there when the engine is rising in revs......at any revs too. as soon as the revs stabilize it stops.

got me stuffed :(

Dare i say it Brian.. But surely the Head has been ruled out by now..

Which leaves the bottom end. Have you put on the oil pressure gauge?

Maybe the oil pump hasnt provided enough pressure and what you are hearing is a worn big end bearing?

Thinking left field... hows the crank pulley? Is there play on the key way? Is the crank pulley bolt tight enough?

Are you using a crank pulley that allows the "special" tool to be fitted so that proper torque can be applied to the bolt?

I am very sympathetic about this build Brian... You will sort it out eventually...

ps... High Tech Cylinder Heads in Malaga..

pressure is good and the bolt is tight....really got me thinking the only thing left is gudgeon noise but .....wtf. they were good.

Ok then..

Try using a thicker rated oil? a 60 weight....? 70 is generally too thick, even tho I used to run it for years... but high boost meant I blew up one engine using a 70 weight.. by blew up I mean spun a bearing... lol

Food for thought only :)

sorry to bring up a old thread guys but im curious about my head gasket choice my engine builder has brought... this head gasket from fel-pro its for a sohc 4g93, will this hold with running over 20psi ???

have you tried removing each coil lead (one at a time) to see if the noise gets quieter on that pot or if the noise changes at all?

yes tried all that and have concluded it is gudgeon noise due to the pistons not having offset pins. everything and I mean everything has been checked and head scratched and checked again.

its done 2000 k now and the noise is actually less noticeable.......probably because everything else got noisier
