eventually got my car lowered yesterday, and all I can say is that the ride is VERY stiff. Would be great for the track, but not very practical for the street. Im getting tons of understeer which im kinda confused as to whats causing this....... Also getting some hard bouncing going around corners, like one half of the car wants to go one way, and the other the other way......

They used the KYB Dirtra shocks (for dirt use only) Laughing

Front springs: King KFFL-80 (Ford Telstar TX5)

Rear springs: King KDFL-57 (Datsun 120Y ute)

HE showed me all of the coils he used in comparision

A) CB lancer GSR FWD springs I supplied

B) The springs that came with the KYB Super Special Dirtra

C) The standard springs

and the Telstar and 120Y springs were both alot lower looking than the rest.

To tell you the truth, i'm not satisfied with the suspension setup, the stock shocks (which were rooted) handled better and was 20x more comfortable ride....

Any options as to what I should be doing next?

Are there any companies out there that make custom coilovers?

DMS?

Your ride quality is probably a direct result of the dirt shocks.

Dirt shocks are effectively rally valved and therefore designed to take the whole weight of the car off a small-intermediate jump. Therefore the valving is EXCESSIVELY stiff and will result in an extremely harsh ride on tarmac.

It isn't helped by the king springs. King springs are known to be the harshest riding springs on the market. You probably have a serious amount of bumpsteer through the front causing the understeer.

IMO. Whoever sorted out your combination needs to be shot.

Well I'd better shoot myself then :D

I bought these shocks off ebay a while ago as they were advertised as E39a shocks. They're actually C73a shocks.

They needed to go in for compliance and RWC as the shocks that came with the car are poked.

I knew they were going to be hard- Aldo also gave me the heads up on them- but not that hard.

They will be getting replaced, after the RWC and compliance.

Now- what to get? Custom coilovers? is DMS the only solution? I suppose if i'm going to be getting serious with some trackwork, suspension is a huge part of any fast car, along with brakes........

anyone else know what road I should be going down?

any advice appreciated,

dre

I'd ring hotbits direct. I'm fairly sure they have a suspension solution that will fit the car. You shouldn't need coilovers if you're only dragging. but if you actually plan on circuit racing or rally work then yes you will.

And I know what you mean by RWC shocks :/ VR4 had same problem a year ago

I want to get into some club days on the track. Esecially against the poobies and later model evo's. AFAIK, the fronts can be resolved using VR4 items, but the rears are a different story, due to the car not having independant rear

you should be able to use your vr4 shocks man...
i know the evo1/2/3 fronts / vr4 fronts are the same
just change the top hat

and from memory, it looks the same with yours
rears could be different..

have u got your stock shocks?
go compare them to some vr4 shocks

i betcha they are the same!
fronts anyway...

if thats the case, drop in your hotbits

Remember VR4's are heavier and therefor have DIFFERENT valving/etc

I know VR4 struts fit in the FWD GSR lancers (thats where my old std ones ended up, rears didnt fit)

The only real issue is the rear setup. Not having IRS means its a real carnt to match anything up with anything else from another car.

I'm probably going to go for something a little stiffer than the hotbits, they're good street shocker, but I need something damper adj, for different settings for the strip/street/track.

Does anyone know if you can get anything else damper adj besides AGX in the KYB range?

Mine arnt either, but the NEW ones are (not sure if all series or just racespec ones)

I used mine for rally for a season, still going strong, could probably do with a rebuild sometime this yr but :(

I think coilovers would give you the same ride as you have now

As in stiffness? Depends on what coilovers and what brand i guess......

Trust me travis, wait till you go for a ride in it, its like it has NO springs.

Im after something damper adj at the least, the only issue is getting part numbers and seeing if theres still stuff availible....

What sort of setup does the rear have, McPherson struts? If so, make up custom coilovers to suit by buying the threaded sleeves and platforms etc, cut the std shocks up, whack some koni inserts in them and then play with spring rates until you are happy. Just some ideas for you to play with anyway.

DMS will be way too much. Way too much for even the occasional track day car.

Find a decent suspension joint (a racing or rally place.. not some wanky place that sells kits and 21's) and they should be able to help you out. Just pick their brains for a while.

I'm sure they can find you a decent shock/spring combo to suit your application. (Or from what they want to sell you, you can find a suitable alternative).

Dre i'm in the same spot as you i need to go out and find

a good set of shockers and springs for my lancer too

the hot bits have a nice coil over ive been looking at for a while now

but i dont know if they make them in our size for the rear

i have also spoken to a guy i know at pedders and he told me to rip

out a front and rear one and give it to him for a while so he can sort

some thing out for me. i just havent got around to it yet
