Howdy all. Just pulled down my w5m33-2-nrwe because it was shifting like a bowl of corn flakes and noticed it has a single brass syncro on 2nd and not a double! Also the teetch are in 3 separate sections and don't surround the whole ring. Anyone know wats going on here?

single syncrhos. ie not an evo box.

you can upgrade to double synchro rings which have synchronizer teeth all along the ring.

I had an NRWE with the same weirdness. It's possible the 'paper' synchro NRWE 'box is from an early '91/'92 GSR and the double synchro 2nd didn't appear til around '93. I have another NRWE I should pull apart some day.

evopwr: An NRWE is definitely a CD5A 'box, most commonly found as an option in the GSR-RS or some facelift GSRs ('94/'95) - instead of the NRBE or GSR-RS/Libero GT NQBE with no optional LSD. A CD9A or CE9A 'box would start with a 'W' or 'U'

Those early single synchro GSR 2nd gears suck ass once they start to wear. The 2nd gear cops most of the abuse of driving hard so you'd want the better double synchros for it that are the same as the Evo.
Dont forget to check your 1/2 synchro hub and slider!!!. Make sure the teeth arent chipped off the slider on 2nd gear side otherwise toss it in the bin and buy a new one.
Mitsu sell the slider/hub combo for over $300 easy farkn. Plus add the cost of new double synchros and anything else you replace whilst you're there.
At least you'd know 2nd gear wont slop and crunch like doing Jenna Jamieson on the beach

Cheers for the input fellas, so does that mean the double 2nd from evo1-3 would be a straight swap on my gearbox?
