I have a standard 4G61 1.6l twin cam engine, and chnaged the cam belt around 5 years ago.
In that time, I have chnaged jobs and catch public transport into the CBD, and only travelled around 50,000 kms.
Should the cam belt be chnaged every 100,000km or over a certain time?
In other words, should I chnage my cam belt now?

Also, is the cam belt an easy change over, or should I pay a mechanics to do it?
Any mechnaice you can recommend in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne?

Cheers
Rob

Its harder to do than sparkplugs, but still mostly handtools. Drag up a utube or vfac on it and see if you think you will be ok.

but id leave it another couple of years. Unless you have another issue that warrants you going in there like a water pump, in that case, id do it then, not before.

Here is the 6-bolt VFAQ :)

I would do the belt at least every 50k kms. Also replace the timing belt tensioner and water pump. Get the oil pump inspected too while it's apart.

If you are going to pay someone to do it then it can get quite expensive as there's a bit of labour involved. It all boils down to how long you are planning on keeping the car for/how much you love it.

You could worry about it later and if the belt snaps or tensioner fails then it's a perfect excuse for a 4G63 from a Galant GSR!

check the belt for crazy cracks if it's showing any signs of damage it's time to replace the average car travels 10 000km/year so thats an average service life of 10years for a timing belt most of our cars should be on their second or third belts by now
