hey everyone

i just brought a gsr with evo running gear

my cam gear belt seems to be loose and just wondering if they are ment to have some play or wether or not they need to be tightened

any help would be awesome

cheers

Hey mate welcome :)

How loose do you mean?

It should be rather taught, like more than a powersteering/alternator belt.

It really shouldn't move that much at all, if it can it may mean your tensioner is has lost its tension and need replacing, or the belt is old and has stretched slightly (Although if the tensioner is working properly it would take up the slack).

Take it too a mechanic to inspect because you don't really want it snapping or falling off!

Welcome forply i've think ive seen your car around Campbelltown is it a blue gsr with a e3 kit. Looks pretty nice.

?

so the fact is the belt looks good and is loose means the tensioner is stuffed.
if i pull the belt in below the gears then the slack is taken out of between the gears.
what and how do i fix the tensioner for my evo 3 motor?????
any help in syd would be muchly appriciated.
Shane

Hi Shane,

You can't physically adjust the tension on the belt as the tensioner is like a spring loaded thing that adjusts itself very slightly due to varying rpm I think.

If the belt is a few teeth out as it sounds like it is, it has either been fitted incorrectly and missed a pulley or something, or the tensioner has broken and allowed some slack in the belt.

Your belt should look like this (Sorry this is someone elses car)

It should be tight like that and if you press between gears it should only move very slightly.

The tensioner should look like this:

Its the blue tensioner bearing thing in the middle, by turning it clockwise after its tight moves the bearing a little to give you some play so you can fit the belt. When you let go it springs into place and provides tension on your cambelt.

I think 'Meek' is in Sydney?? correct me local people :) They will be able to help you out.

They have all the stuff you need on their website.

www.meek.com.au

Hope this helps, its just pretty hard to guarantee its that if I am not there looking in your engine bay :(

Maybe stay off the road until you get this sorted.
