Ceramic coated pistons

Hey guys.

I'm getting ready for a rebuild on my spare 93.
I have a set of brand new stock pistons that I was planning on getting the tops and sides coated, I've been quoted $200 for the set.

Is it even worth trying, or do I just go forged from the start?
Ceramic coating seems so good on paper but there must be reasons why everyone isn't doing it.

My goal is approx 180kW and I'm currently running evo 3 turbo ,ecu ,afm etc..

Anyone have good or bad experiences with coating pistons?

I have ceramic coated crowns and Teflon coated skirts. Used it on plenty of engines in the past with good results. I did it as I removed my oil squirters to help keep the piston cooler and the Teflon is good so you can run a tighter piston clearance

I've got it also on mine.

the Teflon actually wears and needs into the bores over time. meant to be a good thing...

wiseco have coated skirts out of the box.

teflon coating = additional 1thou to the piston so it is compensated with tighter clearances when building as the teflon will eventually wear out.

As a side note I will most likely be going with forged rods.
I know the pistons wouldn't be as strong, but could this potentially be a reliable combo for my goals?

4g93 pistons are supposedly quite strong it's always been the rods you have to worry about. Keep us informed of what you get as I'm about to start building a back up block.

it wears out easily, that's the downside, but its the cheapest insurance you can put on your pistons....

How easy are we talking?
And is it more of a over time it will happen regardless , or just if your pushing it with high boost?

Pretty much if you build your engine with normal tolerances, then have the pistons coated it will act as a safe guard... idealy on a normal engine it can last up to 60,000kms before wearing off... the idea of it all is to act as a fuse, if the piston gets jammed into a bore from a misfire, or if you get a tiny oil surge (loss of windage) the coating will be sacrificed rather than the piston or bore..
sorta like having clear coat on a car, if it gets a little scratch, you dont notice it as it didnt hit the actual paint...
