hey guys,
just wondering what causes the master/slave cylinders to shit themselves?
when i had my rx7, both of them died on me while i owned the car for 2 years or so, and now the slave (i think) has died in the vr4.
both cars have heavy clutches... could this be the reason?
any way you can get them to last longer?
thanks,
Mat

i just replaced my clutch slave
My car sat for ages in japan like 5 months,so a few of the seals were shithouse.
Heavier clutches will exert more load on your seals so u could say it makes them wear out quicker, also any shit or contamination in there will kill ur master seals and make it by pass so keep it clean..dont use cheap shitty parts or fluids and it should last.
Id probably prefer to replace the parts rather then rebuild them.Any scoring i n the barrel will just wear the new seal down if its not removed properly
That way you can safely say your getting a set standard, unless someone you know can offer you a good rebuild with better than factory parts.

if you want to check, get a mate to jump in and pump the pedal
check under the car for fluid leaking out of the slave
if the slave has died, the clutch wont come back up when you push it to the floor either.

yeah, im sure it's the slave...
the pedal sticks to the floor when you push it down.
there are no signs of leakage around the master cylinder, but there was a patch underneath my car on the drivers/gearbox side which im assuming was clutch fluid.
it went to rank rotary on a tow truck today, hopefully it won't be too expensive!

Master Clutch and Slave Cylinder rebuild was one thing that needed to be done when I got my vr-4, for a full rebuild of both I was quoted around $800, luckily mike (sloth) had a couple lying around (thanks again mike). Make sure you get it fixed soon, as because of the problem kinda being ignored it also burned up the clutch which was fairly new.

 $800!!!?!!!?!?!????
i got them done on my rx7, from memory they were about $250 each installed. surely they can't be too different.

That was master and slave cylinder rebuild, all parts and labour. That's when I hunted around and mike let me know he had both lying around, so I ended up getting them off him, which saved quite abit.

there is a mob up here the do stainless steel sleeving i'm sure he priced it at $80 for the slave and $95 for the master fully sleeved and rebuilt

There is an excellent place in Brisbane for sleeving strangly enough called "Stainless Steel Sleeving". They charged $80 to bore, sleeve and rekit my clutch master cylinder, $90 for the brake master cylinder and have quoted around $50 to do the same to the slave, but you have to pull them out and take them to them, they are not that hard to pull out yourselves so why pay someone else to do it.

well i got it back, cost me $301.85 for a new master from mitsubishi, rebuilt slave and labour! :)
feels great too! :)

it pretty much went all of a sudden, one day the clutch pedal just felt really light until it got near the floor, then the next day, after the car being parked over night, i got in it to go to work, pushed the clutch in and it stuck to the floor. after pumping it about a billion times it regained pressure, then lost it again.

Clutch pedal assembly under the dash might have cracks also. This will
cause a lot of freeplay. A 3mm plate at a maximum size that can fit your
firewall inside will stop your firewall flexing because of your very heavy
pressure plates. The 4 bolts holes will hold the plate in place & the extra
plate overall size will stop any heavy footed fella from flexing the wall.
A new master & slave is half the job if you have heavy pressure plates.
Then your sincros will last longer fellas !
But I'm an old man that likes auto's & I don't have your clutch probs.
