Is there any tips or tricks to testing a coilpack to see if it's functioning correctly?

I have a weird stutter under load in 2nd/3rd/4th/5th gears (in my brothers car) and it's not the fuel system or anything else I can find. Occasionally the car will only fire 5 out of 6 cylinders as well.

hence why I want to test it.

Plugs/leads are fine.

if you have a spare do a swap over if not you can buy a tester my mechanic has and you just wave it over the coil packs and it tells you whats going on

.

do you know which cylinder is missing?

if so swap that coil with another and try again.

i have also seen guys using a timing light on each lead and seeing if

the light fires evenly.(obviously cant time it like this)

Not a clue which is missing. It only happens intermittently and you can never force it to happen so it's a pain in the arse. Comes and goes too which is worse... ususally happens then by the time you stop, open the bonnet, it's gone.
