Computer Maintenance?

Hey guys, a question to the computer gurus out there! Just wondering if theres any computer maintenance tips you could give me, apart from running like Ad Aware (or simalar program) Thanks in advance ! 8)

Possibly defragging every now and then? :?

Not sure how effective it is, but I notice it does help a cluttered HDD.

- Spyware Removers, spybot/adaware/hijack this
- Cleanup (remove temp files)
- Anti virus (whichever)
- Disk defrag (If you hdd is full)

just dont have lots of icons or crap loading up on startup either

- Run Ad-aware regularly
- Run Spybot S&D regularly
- Run Avast! Anti Virus (free and awesome)
- Defrag from time to time (although not that important nowadays as lots of HDD's defrag themselves )
- Delete porn regularly :lol:

I'm using AVG free edition, good scanner that works well enough, it's detected a few nasties in the past; very recommended.

I always have those pesky little icons pop up when I restart my comp, however I find it difficult to remove the icons from the bottom right hand corner of my screen.....


any tips to help the n00b overcome this issue?

Download and install Registry Mechanic v5+ from the net :wink: its a great program and does an excellent job. I've had no problems whatsoever running it once weekly. I dont change settings or anything and only run the 'scan your registry' setting and not the other because I dont trust any program that wants to optimise the system for me when regular mtce has proven to be doing well. I leave my computer on 24/7 and it shuts itself off overnight and restarts during maintenance and virus scans.

I also use Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2005 which cleans up all the junk on the computer left over from temp files, uninstalled programs etc.

AntiVirus I use Symantec Antivirus V10, and Windows Defender 2006 - I have not had a problem at all - they update automatically overnight.

When running ADAWARE the only thing Adaware comes up with now is just tracking cookies because Defender is doing a great job (its free from Microsoft website if you have a legit version of windows)

Every now and then I run Spybot Search and Destroy (maybe every few months), which also does a good job in finding some things lurking around that maybe the others didnt pick up on.

I've used heaps of programs and have stuck by with the ones I know work well. I run Win64bit probably now since it first come out over 2 years ago and havent had a virus or problems on the computer to cause me any grief yet and we surf the net everyday :wink:

what programs are they first of all
usually in the options menu of the program there is a box usually saying 'Start up on load' or something along those lines. Just go through each program and untick that box. Sometimes you cant right click on the bottom icons themselves and remove them.

eg winzip icon, if you right click, you can select 'remove, and remove from startup', well something like that

To stop shit starting when windows starts open run (windows key + r).

Type "msconfig" (without quotes).

Click the startup tab and remove ticks from the shit you close down everytime you start windows.

Mmmm this type of knowledge really gets women going 8)

msconfig isnt that good though...
if you want to see everything i suggest getting hijack this... although it is much better to remove programs from starting up via the program and not tweaking the msconfig

this is mad there was about 30 things in that box dunno what any of them were but turned em all off, I guess that is why this computer takes about 10mins after you turn it on before any response can be had from pressing keyes etc, as its trying to load all that shit up first


Question of my own for the nerds, as only one user on the computer how do I set xp so there isnt a need for you to press the box with your name when starting the computer up? I'm sure you didnt have to press this when the computer was new but had a harddrive put in as old one packed up under warranty and now asks to press to login even tho only one user, I fiddled with "user accounts" in control panel but can't get rid of it. basicly I wanna be able to hit power button walk away for a few mins and come back and the computer is ready to use, any ideas?

Oh yea, i should know the answer to this question but i dont think i do since i dont make more than one account.

If you have an ati graphics card, and have installed Microsoft .NET framework 1.1, you will need to install version 2.0, as it gets rid of the login problem when theres one user only.

Other than that, if there are no second account users, it should just loading into the first one automatically. I should be able to ask some other people though and find out if its not the v1.1 .net framework from microsoft thats causing it.

btw, i would not untick all the boxes from msconfig, as some things you want to load when windows beings, eg internet login software/tv tuner card/video graphics card drivers etc etc etc

roger the startup folder only shows you certain programs, most malware etc wont be in there.

Click START
Click RUN
Type msconfig
Go to startup

But yes, most malware won't be sitting out there in the open waiting for you to go and stomp on it!
