hey guys, just seperated my crankshaft pulley on the way to work this morning. Ordered up a new one, it will be a week before i get it. So here my question;
The evo 1-3 manual says the torque on the crankshaft pulley bolt to 18 ft/lbs, is there 4 bolts or just 1? and is this the correct torque? i read that it requires a heck of alot of force to break the bolts, so i assume it requires more torque than the manual says. Thankx

Ive always used a rattle gun for undoing that bolt and lock tight for when its getting installed.

check again mate....it should be the large bolt in the centre
and it would have to be tighter than that

the 4 smaller bolts hold on the front pulley

The large crankshaft bolt for the 4G63T is definitely 110-130Nm (80-94ft-lbs) as per VR4 6 bolt manual, and 120Nm (87ft-lbs) as per EVO 7 bolt manual... basically the same thing. Dont know why the 2 litres are less than the 4G93x series (181Nm), but thats what the workshop manuals say. The 4 smaller crankshaft pulley bolts are only 20-30Nm (14-22ft-lbs).

The 4 bolts that hold the Harmonic balancer ( crank pulley ) on are 18 ft pounds.
You will not have to remove the large crank bolt just to change the harmonic though :smt102
Make sure that you drop the tension on your acc belts before trying to refit your new one.
As Jon said, also make sure that it didn't eat through the timing cover damaging the belt when it let go.

the pulley just seperated, did'nt come off completely, kinda got stopped by the wheel well. And i just had the timing belt replaced with a brand new kevlar one ;)

Dude you f**king me up. Ok there is only 1 crankshaft pulley, right? So the crank shaft pulley has the harmonic balancer too. so my pulley separated at the harmonic balancer. I already ordered the crankshaft pulley, and it takes a week. Please tell me if i'm forgeting something. Camskills offers the part that separated, here http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m8b0s2263p10803&i=12863

and it separated along this crack they show

no, there is 2 but they bolt together

there is the harmonic balancer which you have pictured, and there is the little pulley that bolts onto the harmonic balancer.
the pulley should be ok as its pressed steel.

the big bolt holds the lower crank gear onto the crank............
the 4 small bolts hold the pulley and the balancer to the lower crank gear.

the rubber on the balancer splits which is a pretty common fault.

have you looked at 2g stuff over there as over here evo is the same
as some non turbo galants etc...

Can you take a picture of this other pulley that bolts onto the balancer Dougmo?
I have mine off atm and there is just the harmonic balancer ( which has a pulley bonded to it ) which bolts on with 4 bolts? No pulley that connects to it anywhere.

also check the condition of your cam wheels, when the outer ring seperates from the inner ring of the crank pulley it can pull on the cam wheels and actually bend them outwards snapping the cam retaining pin

my mistake guys,im getting my 4g engines mixed up
i am thinking of a 4g61.....not 63

so i will start again..... the big bolt holds the lower crank gear onto the crank.....the 4 smaller bolts secure the harmonic balancer to the gear

the only thing you need is what you had pictured above....

and tim if you do want to see the extra pulley i can get a pic...
you could run a dry sump pump off it maybe

sorry for the confusion on my behalf...i have been plyaing with 4g61s and i got mixed up.

It has to do that!!! how the heck can you tell if it is broken or not?

this should have NO bearing on the condition of the cam gears! the main timing gear is firmly bolted to the crank so the timing belt will in its original position. It will also mean you dont have to redo any timing! just your P/S and A/C belts.

about the only thing MITsu have done right!
