Has any one ever had a diff die or wear out on them?
I dont mean in catastrophic fashion on a dragstrip launch or anything..i mean wear out or fail....Do they make any noise,or at any certain RPM....Whine or grumble?

Thanks.

yep
the diff in my rx7 shat itself... before it eventually mashed the teeth on the pinion gear and broke the pin, it was making rattling and clunking noises.

Shit....!!
Thats sound nasty..its just i have a grumble when i deccelarte between 3000-2000.Dunno if its a wheel bearing,CV or diff.Wheel bearings are usually a more constant hum i think...

It's most likely a worn centre diff. How many km's has the gearbox done.

Mine does the same thing, more noticable with more load ie. full car or A/C on.

I'm currently saving for a gearbox rebuild to fix this and some other issues.

Its only done 50K
The cars in really good condition..
Do you mean a centre case/transfer case?
the noise is relevant to the back passenger corner.

is this the same vr4 that had the hit on that corner? was it making the noise before the hit - or could the misaligned rear cradle be putting a weird angle on your driveshafts/diff causing the noise?

I'm pretty sure you will find its not the diff, my '88 j spec has had that noise from when I got it with an alleged 45000 on the clock. Still yet to get to the bottom of it but I can tell you its not the diff and its not the carrier bearings for the drive shaft. Its pointing more & more towards the gearbox even though the sound seams to come from the rear (you should hear how loud it is when you pull your back seat out!).

Great!!
Not

So how much do You know about this?
How on earth the gearbox could make a noise from the oppossing end is a weird concept.
Do you think C.V joints could do it? I could imagine it with the seats out,its a grumble noise hey...?
It only just occured last week, after i fixd my car up,i hit a gutter, fixed now,Dunno if thats got n e thing to do with it?

Wat about couplings or uni joints?

mine started out as a vibration during deceleration from about 3000 rpm down to about 2500 rpm, more noticable when coasting down hills with your foot off the gas, vibration comes, just touch the gas or apply the brakes, vibration goes away.

The vibration slowly turned into a rattle/ grating like sound, same sound as if one of the aluminium heat shields above the exhaust was loose (checked that too). Has not gotten any worse over the last year (still a loud rattle), I don't know if its audible from outside the car, but if you are coasting down a hill with the windows down, you can hear the sound bounce off any gutters or islands in the middle of the road so I'm assuming so.

Still yet to pull my box and right angle drive apart to have a look. So little time, so many bloody cars to fix.

Weird that yours came only after your incident. Maybe the impact has screwed something up in the rear. Check the rear wheel bearings for any play or slop.

It's the box. Specifically it's your centre differential. I've had mine apart to check. I didn't replace anything though.

My vr4 has this exact same noise not that I care. Nothing in there is due to break anytime soon.

So do you know what causes the noise?
