Story goes...Got home from a long drive last night and while opening the gate to put car in garage noticed oil under the car (Evo 1)
About 1k from home coming through a round a bout..I heard something?? hit floor of the car which turned out to be one of the mounting bolts from the carrier..Lucky I was only around the corner and got it home without damaging anything cause what I found today could have been a major drama if it happened miles from home..
On closer inspection in the daytime this morning I've discovered that BOTH bolts have sheared away leaving around half of the bolt still in the mounting holes in the back of the block.....(Prick!!!!)

My question/s are....What would have caused this issue(haven't been flogging it)
And how the fuck do I get them out without having to rip motor out?
Couple of people have suggested Ezy Out or similar but not sure Im going to have enough room to get a drill in there to drill pilot hole to get one in...Another suggestion was a right angle drive for the drill but still need to centre punch the bolt to get drill started..but don't think this will be possible either due to lack of room...
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I tackle this Prick of a mission...

with the driveshaft removed, you may be able to chase the remains around with a chisel or a centre punch. you may be suprised that the bits are quite loose and come out easily.
all of the tension should have been on the bolt heads and quite loose on the threads.
goodluck

yeah i've had bolt sheer off on me (not the same ones your talking about and they came out with just my fingers. unless they're ceased maybe if they're too tight to undo by hand get some vice grips on there if you have enough exposed thread to get a lock on them

I too have had this happen....while i was being a dickhead in driveway...so at least I didn't have fare to drag it.

my bolts came out very easily....whew. I found the cause was the bolt bottomed out before being fully tight. the fact the bolt had a bit machined out of the first bit of the thread not only camouflaged the issue as the thread wasn't damaged but also meant the bolts were always easy to get out again due to lack of damage

IIf only there was thread exposed I wouldn't have bothered with this thread!! But there isn't so Im hoping its as easy as Brian and Jack suggest!!

i had one bust in my recaros no thread expose it it's lose enough you can put your thumb over the bolt and twist to expose some thread. mine had the tiniest little bur that i could get a finger nail on to use ase leaverage

This is how ive done it in the past.

Goodluck dude i hope its this easy for you

Shit man, thats why the right bolts for that cv hanger bracket is very important. Some people whack any old bolt in and they can screw in on an angle, put more load on one bolt than the other, then snap one off, then the other.
In the meantime grab a long FWD driveshaft so you can at least drive the car around to and from places to get people to look at it/ repair it.
If its still got some bolt hanging out of it, just weld it like this way to remove it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIJIVZpZZIw&feature=related
Works a treat :)
PS: If you dont have access to a welder, fit the FWD shaft on, drive to a zorst shop and get them to weld to it and remove it for you ;)

It had the correct bolts in it I assure you...They werent just any old bolt...
As i posted above, there is no thread hanging out unfortunately, so the above idea is not going to happen either....Thanks anyway..
I managed to get one out quite easily with the Ezy Out method but while trying to get the second one out the poofter Ezy Out has just snapped off in the hole I drilled in the remaining bastard bolt so now Im fucked....And extremely pissed off with the whole shit fight.
Looks like my long weekend will be spent removing the motor to drill the arsehole of a thing out and tap a new thread...
Not happy.

This is what it looked like before I Fucked it all up.....

Sucks dogs balls....The one I got out required next to no effort just drilled a little hole then put Ezy Out in turned it 3-4 times and it came out....
The other one..I've drilled numerous times, hit with hole punch, cursed, sworn and threatened it with much violence only to have it fuck me up and snap my Ezy Out in it as payback....Bastard!

we sometimes used to get taps broken off in holes, because we used to chase threads with the tap mounted in a rattle gun (1/2" drive only!) anyway, taps and ezyouts are made of the same stuff, to get the broken tap out we would heat the tap up till red hot with the oxy then smash it with hammer. this would break the flutes off the tap and allow the pieces to be retrieved from the hole.
probably doesnt help much...

what are the bearings like on the support? thats only way i can think of there being any load at all on those bolts.

Turns out I had A VR4 carrier on the Evo motor....Which bolts into different hole on the block...so I have now switched to an Evo carrier which only uses the hole which I extracted bolt from and the hole closer to timing cover so Didnt bother trying to get the other out....The reason the bolts snapped was because ONE of the bolts must have bottomed out due to the step in the VR4 carrier and the other one which I got out was only JUST reaching thru the carrier so had fuck all thread in the block.....Pictures will explain what Im on about......
