Drycell Batteries - is a sealed box required?

Help Support 4GTuner:

I've just been all through this for my rally car. I spoke with an engineer that I know and a battery company that does alot of Police Car and Ambulance work.
I ended up buying a Deka agm battery. It is fully sealed, ie.you can install it upside down etc and it won't leak. However, even fully sealed batteries create gases when being recharged and obviously it is not wise to build up pressure inside a battery casing. The Deka has vent holes in the top, Optimas have vent holes in the side.
Up here, the general concenscous is that a sealed battery does not have to be in a battery box, but must still be ventilated to outside the car. The Optimas make this easy as you just plumb a plastic barb into the vent hole and a piece of tubing to outside the car. You can't do that with the Deka therefore it is supposed to be in a sealed battery box and the box is supposed to be ventilated to outside the car (Yes officer, I was just on my way to a battery place to have it done :D).

But, that won't stop a cop with a grudge with insufficient knowledge from picking on it .

Hmmm.

I'm thinking I'll just stick with my heavy arse lead-acid battery in a box and make up some aluminium brackets to secure it to the floor.

My driving ability isn't that great that I'll really be able to tell the difference between a heavy and not-so-heavy battery at the moment anyway! :p
