hey guys...

as some of you know, i just bought a new screamer/dump pipe for the vr4, and i took it down to the exhaust place last night to get fitted and picked up today.

well... there were a few headaches, a stud broke off in the turbine housing and had to be drilled out (turbo and manifold had to be taken off) and then some of the holes on the flange had to be re-drilled but in the end, the dump pipe got fitted.

i drove up the street to the atm so i could pay the guy in cash and noticed that the turbo was making a really loud whistling noise and not making any boost.

i got home and opened the bonnet and noticed the intake pipe was very loose, so i pulled it off and noticed this:

the other thing i'm worried about is... where did the other pieces of the compressor wheel go? hopefully stuck in the end tank of the intercooler!

mat

when fitments go wrong..
NEVER take your car to a place that has never worked on 4G's before!!

anyways that turbo is fucked.. its a bin item.. not much useable after it.. cos the rear wheel will also look like that.. so you cant even hi flow it..

Jon

PS: i hope you didnt pay them.

why would the turbine wheel look the same?

if something hit the turbine wheel could it break the compressor wheel?

and yeah, i paid him :?

if something has gone thru the comp wheel it would of gone thru the exhaust wheel too.. i doubt its still in your motor as the turbo is sucking.. so thats why your rear wheel would look exactly the same..

in other words.. theres not much useable on that turbo to beable to hiflow it.. and it looked like a 470 Evo 3 turbo too.. oh wells.. time for a turbo upgrade?

Jon

well not quite true actually jon... however the turbine wheel may still be screwed, as the turbo would be spinning out of balance because the comp wheel is screwed (yes ive done this before :)) but the reason the blades wouldnt not have gone thru the other side is that:
1) they get stuck in the intercooler, when the wheel exploded in the rally car, we took the cooler off and was able to shake most of it out the cooler, as for the tiny bits that get thru the intercooler, and
2) the extreme temp's in the cyl's caus the alloy to just discntergrate (however its spelt) so rip the turbo off and get it checked (by some one who knows what they are doing ;)) it may just be a rebuild job..

omg mat
that is seriously fuckzorded!!!

take it back to the place and ask them whats going on...
they should be responsible for it dude...
they took the turbo off
they put it back in..

who did the work?

hahahaha fuckzorded!

But I agree with barry, if they took the turbo off and put it all back together it's their fault. It's just a matter of them owning up to it.

Maybe that $1000 23G would be an option.

Goodluck with whatever happens

it was just an exhaust shop barge and i have visited for a while now.

i don't want to say who they are until i find out how they react to this.

if they are a good reputable shop and you are a repeat customer they should look after you and sort it from their end-will be tough to prove they did anything, they can just claim you own a performance vehicle and how could a turbo failure be their fault when they cant control how you drive the car...heres hoping they cough up and do the right thing

What do you guys think that a mechanic could have done to cause this damage? (I have been trying to imagine different scenarios...but have come up with nothing)

when ours let go it was a shagged bushing inside the turbo, it was slightly out of balance, but when that let go the comp wheel hit the housing, and the result was as u can see above! only thorught is that somthing was accidently dropped into the intake.. but still strange??

Heres a couple of questions.

Was the intake pipe taken all the way off/out, or just loosened and pushed aside?

Did that intake pipe get blocked by some tape or at least blocked by a rag to stop a stray bolt/nut/clamp from falling in?

I always block up intake/intercooler pipes with a rag to stop stuff from falling in.

Just dont forget to remove them when your done

dropped a bolt or something in there, and connected everything up without realising..?

i don't know what happened, i wasn't there...

all i know is, the car was making solid boost and sounded normal the day i drove it to the workshop. i picked it up and it wouldn't make and boost and the turbo was making a very loud and unusual whistling noise.

the intake pipe was taken off the car... i dont know how the sillicone spacer on the turbo could go missing without the intake being taken off.

and also, the manifold and the turbo were removed from the car so the broken stud could be drilled out of the turbine housing, the intake pipe would have to be taken off to take the turbo out.

just take it back dude, pretend you know nothing and just tell them that the car sounds funny and doesn't make boost and ask if they could check it..

tell them u haven't touched it..
let them find it themselves.. ask them to check the turbo if anything is loose...

then hope that they find the problem and take responsibility...
