I got an EPA letter last week so i have to make my exhaust more quiet. What's the easiest way? Replace it with a stock set up? Change my muffler?

exhaust

When I went for my rego inspection the exhaust registered a 94dB reading so I threw a little pea shooter muffler on the end instead, took it back and just passed with 89dB. You should be right with just a muffler with a tiny pipe.

I should add it depends on how loud it is now!!!

i stuffed heaps of steel wool behind the muffler

just dont boost it there cause some may come flying out

if you go this route make sure u dont use the "cleaning" steel wool! makes for a very bad drive home....

Steel plate with a couple of small holes drilled in it bolted between your exhaust and muffler flange does wonders :)

they check for those.... :p

what kind of muffler/exhaust is on there now Olly? can you make a pea shooter muffler to interchange with the rear exhaust section like i have?

i got done by EPA before for noise, so i took an old muffler to an exhaust place, and they welded on a pipe and flange (from memory looks about 1.5" in diameter but not sure) and it bolts on to the flange with the rest of the exhuast - bolts into the spot shown in GSRSOL's picture or thereabouts.... then i passed the test and put my cannon back on

If you have 2.5 - 3" pipes, and a flanged exhaust, take an empty rexona can, pierce it, cut the spray part off, then put a few holes in the bottom section (say, 8). Fill with steel wool. Then make a couple of tabs to allow it to hold itself between the flanges of your exhaust. Try to put it as far away from the tailpipe as you can (post cat), that way if they shine a torch up your exhaust they can't tell.

Quietened my car down a lot, and I have (effectively) an XS power muffler.

Try not to drive too much like this, the amount of additional backpressure this causes is very noticeable. But, it is cheap and easy, so if it doesn't work well enough you're only out five bucks, plus you get to feel the same power output as a datsun 120y.

ive had plenty of EPA tests, some testers are anal about "baffle plates" and some don't even bother looking under the car.

if you have a flange, replace the gasket with a thin piece of steel with a few little holes in it. that should quieten it down, but don't drive the car hard while it's in.

it's got a holden ss muffler on it.. ill have a look underneath it tomorrow.. should i just go wreckers and hunt for a cc stock exhaust and then take it to an exhaust place to fit it on for me with flanges?..

nah, just make a restrictor plate like Matt said. I do it all the time for mates exhausts when they go through Regency. As long as it is thin steel and slightly smaller than the flange gasket they will never know its there. Drill like 6 smallish holes in it and it quiets down a lot. My G/F's ET pulsar had 95db, after I put the plate in it went down to 84db. Just keep the boost low, dont plant it at all. Easy to make, install and remove.

WHY do people go to such drastic lengths to temporarily quieten an exhaust? A pair of 18" resonators will not harm performance and will quieten the exhaust dramatically. It wont sound boring like a stock exhaust, but it will make it legal and you wont have to worry about it at all again.

Get an XFORCE VAREX muffler and not get pulled over for noise in the first place, especially where you know you have a chance of being heard by the authorities (plus they will make the neighbours happy especially at night  ). I bought two a couple of months ago for $399 each for my brother and I. View the video link here where they use it on a WRX and then close the butterfly  : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7jGYnhbQQU .

Overall the quality is very impressive with the only downfall being that Im not too sure how the car is gonna like it when the butterfly is closed as the escape holes look to be a couple of inches wide in diameter. Not that you'd be full throttle and getting up it with the butterfly closed though so it'll quieten the car when you need it to. They have a 10 year stainless warranty and a 12 month mechanicals warranty. They come with a hoop for installation and a exhaust gasket and flange ready to bolt onto a 3" exhaust.

Now if only they made it in non cannon form, then I might be interested... but I suppose that is only a little while away.

Pretty much every mod is illegal anyway. With an adjustable muffler your beating the authorities at their own game.

Its a bit like a duel blow off valve. If you drive with it in plumb-back mode on the street its 100% legal. If you set it to atmo venting its illegal. If you get pulled over and its in plumb-back they technically cant ping you for it as they would be modifying the car if they set it to atmo. Think of it as the fact that we have an accelerator, but we choose not to put our foot down to exceed the speed limit. I know the law is pretty grey and they do say that you are not supposed to be able to adjust any part of the vehicles emissions system from inside the car, but are we actually changing emissions with the butterfly?? I think not. It's just sound, and we choose NOT to change it on the street (should they pull us over and notice it anyway).

i don't think its a legal/illegal factor.. at the end of the day if it looks like it can be defected it probably will be.. also dual blow off valves are defectable..
