just wondering what a normal engine oil temp is, whats the most they will reach and what temp is normal operating temp.

whether you are stock or highly modded post it up please.. :)

cheers
Adrian

from what i've been told, 100 degrees is good as it boils out the water. 120 ish is getting into the danger zone. Mine used to run at around 80 hot which is why i purchased a thermostat for the oil cooler. My oil never got hot enough.

Not sure on the oem mitsu stuff as the jspecs all came with built in thermo's

they sit between 70 and 90 deg's, I wouldnt let it hit 100

thats why the evo has the 120 oil temp gauge and the 150 is a water temp

Jap Spec vr4, factory air-cooled oil cooler, factory thermostat, temp sensor in the head (before the turbo), Speco electric oil temp guage.
Typically when cruising - 90 degrees C
When doing motorsport - 120 degrees C max.

100 degrees C for oil is not a problem.

i read somewhere that at 125 degrees C your bearings start to fail

most engines should be able to handle 120 with out too much issue.

on the gp rally the e36 m3 i was in would hit 145 on the track and still be fine

I have been told by a guy that I trust that 150 degrees C on synthetic oils is about limit that you don't want to be going over too regularly. Any higher than that and you need to look at better cooling.

quote taken from the net:

"According to one manufacturer, if the oil is at a temperature of 125C, the bearings can be at 170C, which is enough to make the bearings go to lunch"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the crankshaft one of the first places to get oil after the oil has been pumped through the cooler?

I am taking my readings from the head. I would expect the oil temp to be a bit hotter by the time it gets to my sensor. I would expect the oil to be a fair bit hotter again after it has been through the turbo as well.

If it were a problem from the start, I think Mitsubishi would have changed it. I guess it also depends alot then on the type/ quality of bearings you are using. My engine is unopened, so original Mitsi bearings in use.

I imagine the hottest place would be in the oil return pipe from the turbo to the sump. Not an easy place to put a sensor.

The stock Evo sender goes into the sump drain hole (and doubles as the sump plug.)

The 120 degree and 150 degree mitsubishi gauges are actually both for oil temp, the 120 degree ones were standard on EVO 1s, but EVO 2 & up got 150 degree ones.

Mine runs at about 80-90 .....

One of the biggest head aches using the evo triple gauges is buying the mitsu oil temp sender plug, not cheap and there aren't any other available senders compatible to the Mitsu oil temp gauge either.

you can order it through Meek.com.au

just to bring this up again.

my engine sits around 70-80deg just for normal driving, but after a very very hard bashing have seen it near 95deg
