hey guys just cant decide which way will be easier to get the motor out of my other car, its the 1.8l glxi, is it easier to unbolt the whole subframe and lift the body off the frame or to pull all shafts and steering parts off and just pull the engine and box out the top, i have jack stands, trolly jack, engine crane etc so really could be done either way just not sure which is easier

cheers

id unbolt all shafts and steering gear and pull the motor + box out the top. isnt it just the cross member and k frame down bottom? wouldnt be stable and hard to place on jack stands.

it comes out through the top just as easy. but if you don't want to risk bumping lines and conectors drop it out the botom if you can get the shell high enough

I was thinking of jacking up the car, using jack stands, then hook the engine crane to the motor, undo the frame bolts and what ever else then lower the crane till the whole lot is on the floor then disconnect it and lift the car over the motor, have done it with a Camry once but with out the crane, I have a leveler and stuff for the crane so might be easier to just pull it out the top, just about everything is disconnected will just have to pull out the drive shafts to pull it out the top... Does anyone know if the steering rack is bolted to the firewall or to the removable frame? Just wondering if I'd have to dicconnect the lines so the rack goes with the frame or if I should unbolt the tie rid ends from the hubs if I do drop it out the bottom

Well I'll probly go through the top then... What holds the cv shafts into the gear box? I tried levering the drivers side out with a couple of big flat heads but it wouldn't shift -_- is there a bolt or clip or something I can't see?

There is a sirclip on the end of the shaft inside the box which keeps them locked in....You need a good lever like a short crowbar or similar and a good hard nudge should pop it out of the box..you just need to lever it off the side of the box in the right spot with a bit of force and it will happen...make sure you drain the oil in the box first but !!

Or just undo the cv boot strap and pull the cv out the cv cup, leaving the cups still in the gearbox. Put end of cv in a plastic freezer bag or something so doesnt get dirty. Its heaps easier imo. Also when removing the gearbox from the top, place the engine crane pivot point a little bit bias (closer) to the timing belt side of the engine rather than smack bang in the middle of the engine. That way when you lift the motor out, the back of the gearbox sits lower and clears the chassis rail during removal. The ass end of the gearbox should be the last thing leaving the engine bay that way :) People might do theirs differently but thats how Ive preferred to do it for years when lifting out through the top :)

Out the top for me

I did it the other night the same way EVO00X has explained it above, took me under an hour to get the engine out and seperate the box from block
