Evo 1,2,3 rear brake caliper overhaul.

Whilst attempting to replace the seals on the rear brake calipers, a snag has arisen.

How is it that you get the piston out?

Do you have to twist (Using the shape ontop of the piston face) the it?

Would it have something to do with the handbrake actuator?

some have to be screwed out,but Im not 100% on that

With the calliper off the car, place a block of wood in where the disc would go and then gently apply compressed air to the brake line and BANG, one will pop out. You will have to muscle the other one out though.

AH sorry, you said "rear" calliper.
Yes, unscrew them out.

the weird shape being the slots on the front of the piston?

they are so you can screw the pistons in and out more easily. i use a grinding wheel tool to screw them in and out...makes it nice and easy

Next question seeing the piston is now free, how do you disassemble the handbrake lever?

I know I'm going to have to acquire some long circlip pliers to pull the inside of the piston bore out.

remove centre consol around hand brake undo the bolts attaching the hand brake lever to the floor, then twist out the cables from the T piece and push the cable all the way back so all the excess cable is at the calliper end.
its the easiest way to do it and reverse when resembling.

Finally managed to get the one stripped down after a lot of head scratching. Pretty clever design once you have the thing all in pieces.

Now just the other side to go.

I just got a pair or EVO twin pot calipers, is there any advice on how to overhaul them?? what needs to be replaced?? anything

Check for rust in the bores and on the pistons. If all is good, then throw a new seal kit in, lube the slide pins and slap them on.

Where do i get the seal kit from??? mitsu??

Hell no, disassemble them and take them to any old brake place and they can measure them and order the right seal kit in for you. Was about $25 per side when I did mine a few years ago.

Sweet cheers guys, just something i wanted to do before i throw them on the car, they look abit old looks like they been sittin around for years and i dont trust them how they are

That's one if the only things on my car I haven't replaced the seals on they are the stock ones and had quite a bit of rust all over them when I originally fitted them, I've since cleaned up the rust that's it, no issues after 5+years
