Hi All,
It looks like my Evo 3 coil pack has decided not to work so I was wondering if there is any aftermarket or better Mitsubishi coils i could replace them with? Bare in mind that I am still running an an OEM evo 3 ecu atm.

How do you know its the coils? Could it be the ignitor?
Any VR4, GSR, Evo I-III, Proton GTi and Proton M21 (pre 2003 model Protons that used the Mitsu ECU and 4G93P engine, not SIEMENS ECU) twin coils are the same as EVO's.
You can even use a GSR or Proton ignitor as well.

Yeah I had a feeling someone might say that, The two leads to cylinders 1 and 4 are working fine. The other two (2 and 3) are not sparking at all. They are conected to the same coil so I assumed that the ignitor is fine and it's just the coil closest to the cam belt cover. Am I right?

probably right....but it could be your "cas" as well. another thing I have recently seen was a tacho that was rooted causing the coil it was wired to to look like it was stuffed.

any way I have a spare cas that i will lend you to make sure that isn't the problem and if you have anything wired into that coil to sense spark........disconnect it to see if the issue goes away

Yeah Brian's right. Dobule check your CAS, INCLUDING the plug that plugs into the CAS. You'll be surprised how many plugs I've seen that have freyed and exposed CAS wires!! so you might not be getting a connection at the plug too.

Brian: nothing else wired to coils etc, fully stock setup.
If it was the CAS then wouldn't it affect the whole engine and not just cylinders 2 &3? CAS plug is a better reason from what i gather (with my limited knowledge  )
Anyway I'll head over to yours this afternoon Brian if that's cool?

no worries mate see you then.....I will explain why the cas can do this too when you get here

So after some phone calls to the east (Thanks to Travis at Knox) and Ralliart and visiting two workshops to get some testing done on the coils and ignitor it looks like the ignitor was the problem after all.
I can get a replacement ignitor from:

1. Over East 2nd hand for $75 (freighted).
2. New non-genuine fitted for $250 (inc). (3. Genuine Mitsy ex-Japan for $303 (excl).
3. New genuine Mitsy ex-Japan for $303 (excluding) with a four week wait!!
The question is, new or 2nd hand?

Edit- No 2 is genuine; I found out after posting msg
