Evo 4 timing belt

So i did a stupid thing: was replacing the oil filter housing yesterday and the guide I looked at said remove centre crank pulley bolt. So i did and pulled the pulley off, along with the lower timing gear. Now i know the engine is an interference one so what is the best thing for me to do to get it all back together without smashing valves?

I havent turned the motor (obviously) so was going to pull the tensioner, put the gear back on and make sure i have the belt tight as per fitting a belt normally. Refit the tensioner (compress/pull the pin) and hope like hell that its all good. Will turn to TDC, check cam timing etc and go from there.

Is there any tolerance with timing? AS in 1/2 teeth out will i be ok??

I did my timing belt 2 weeks ago. With all the markings in the right spot, you should have 17 teeth in between the 2 cam gear timing marks. I don't think you wanna risk being 1 tooth out. Don't know how you would end up with 1/2 a tooth out tho.

StuC you should be ok with turning it back to top dead with one tooth or two out, I would be fine doing that with my RVR HSG which has the evo 3 running gear. Just keep an eye on the marks on your crank and balance shafts and if it look like its getting close there and the cam marks look way off you might have a problem. Take your time and crank by hand slowly, take your plugs out to make it easier to turn and GOOD LUCK.

Pretty much what django says. But I wouldnt worry about putting belt on till the marks are aligned.
Pull plugs and turn crank by hand till marks align then put belt on. If pistons touch the valves while you are hand turning crank you just need to move cams till they align. Dont force anything and check the harmonic balancer mark is correct when you put it on.

If you move it with the belt off just be sure to double check your balance shaft behind your oil pump is in the right spot. There's a bolt in the block on the inlet manifold side on a section of flat surface, pop it out and stick a screwdriver in and make sure it can go all the way in, say 3" or 4". You'll know if it hits the shaft, if so go another turn on it, align mark and try again.
