Exhaust help needed please

hey guys

just about ready to get my new exhaust put on but want to know what are the advantages of stainless. i have a 4g63t with afew mods to the engine so not sure what to do?exhaust guy said $600 for 3" mandrel bent hi flow cat from dump back + cannon tip or the same in stainless for about $1300....................... :? :idea: :? :idea: :?:

Stainless is alot lighter, but if your not going to keep the car for more than 5 years, a mild steel exhaust should do the trick- spend the difference on some more mods!!!


$1300 sounds about right if its a quality stainless exhaust, I have a reciept from Exhaust Technology in Adelaide for a 3" JUN B.L exhaust that the previous owner of my old VR4 had put on for $1500. (Cade- have you got it on yet???)

Stainless,Size for size,dimensionally matched is actually heavier..
The advantage is it doesnt rust,Well depending on the nickel/chromium content,if its 304 it may rust after a few years if exposed to major heat,only surface rust though..316 grade will not rust.

Some say it sounds different,its possible but i dont know.
Stainless work hardens easier than mild steel,so its more prone too cracking,but if done properly,it will be supported properly,and wont crack

It it has a much lower coefficient of thermal conductivity, so it keeps more heat inside and transmits it throught the system better and out the back of the car. Radiated heat levels are lower,this helps gas velocity,(minnimally) and of course it helps your floor pan from getting too hot...
So there you go...apparantlly it gives you more power.

i can only agree with all the technical stuff there, but i can tell you from experiance, stainless is f*cking heavy compared to other metals, probibly neglidgable in an xhaust system tho.

i dont know how much difference it makes to turbo cars, but it does seem to be raspyier on n/a

In this case it probably is because of the thin material...and of course the type would impact on the weight.
The weight difference would be negligent.
So dont let a "lightweight system" swing your opinion,
As an exhust theyre probably weighing in the same.

And the note is supposedlly a higher pitch.

No one actually sees your exhaust - don't waste your money - if you want bling then get a stainless muffler. They just get black from your exhaust gases anyway (unless you clean it like 3 times a week).

Like its been said above - there is no weight advantage - stainless is far heavier than than mild for the same dimensions. Mild won't rust through (surface rust of course because its hot) in 20 years - how long do you plan on having the car...

$600 is a very good price for a 3" mandrel system - I spent $470 on parts for a 2.5" system that I made myself...

Keep the extra $700 and spend it on something worthwhile... IMO

the exhaust places that i spoke to about it said that if anything, just use a stainless rear muffler and the rest in mild, because the amount of heat in the pipe closer to the engine will dry out any moisture and prevent rusting anyway if the car is driven regularly.

mild steel does rust. On the outside, and on the inside, water is a by product of combustion. Rusting on the inside means a gradual loss of smoothness = more resistance to flow.

Thats over a long term time scale though. not as long as 20 yrs, maybe 2-3.

IMO having a rusted exhaust, which you can clearly see if driving behind, looks cheap and nasty.......... and also gives me the impression that the rest of the car has been treated with a similar cost-cutting approach.

my old exhaust was mild steel, i routinely pulled it off every 3 months and re primed and painted it in gunmetal. was a pain in the arse.

Do it once do it right, Stainless steel.

dude if you can see any part of an exhaust apart from the muffler when you are driving behind - then whoever made/installed it is an idiot - besides if its low enough to see then you aren't going to have it on the car long anyways because the first pot hole or speed bump is gonna take it off.

Secondly the minimal surface rust you do get on a mild exhaust is not going affect flow on a 1" exhaust let alone a 3" exhaust, which is well oversized for a 4 cylinder 2L car (even approaching 400HP - do the calculations you will see).

And if you are that paranoyed about rust on your exhaust - just paint it with a cold galvanising zinc paint when you put it on and it will be fine for 10 years at least - if you still have the car in 10 years and its rusted - come find me, i'll buy you a stainless exhaust... 8)

why dont you get a mild steel system made up then get it power coated ? now that will perform better and last longer then s/s and if your also orried about cost and live in melb go down to Springvale Exhaust Centre and ask for mike (if you see a big guy named hans dont talk to him his a rip off). mike will look after you,he did my mild steel cat back system for $220 and the welds are nice too
