I've recently bought a new evo 3 16g turbo from them. Its been on the car less than 1000km and 6months old. My car suddenly started blowing white smoke and ended up being the turbo. Found out it has 2-3mm of play and leaking oil. The fins has been surfaced and tips are slightly bent.

Im not sure if the have warranty on their turbos but has anyone dealt with them regarding warranty on their item. If not I'll just email them and find out.

You will have to send it back to them I think Jono.
Where did you feed the oil from? Head or filter housing?
If its the filter housing you might want to look at what sort of oil pressure the turbo was seeing as high pressure will kill journal bearings pretty fast.
From your description it sounds to me like an oil issue though Jono. I can have a look if you like.

You might want to drain your oil to make sure that contamination isn't an issue too.
And what oil drain are you running? Stock?

Ps, I had to fix the title! Was bugging me!

I ran a braided oil line from head to turbo as stock setup.

Yea I took the turbo off already. I knew it was from the turbo cause oil was leaking from the manifold - turbo flange where I knew I had an exhaust leak. After removing the air intake found oil traces on the turbo intake side. Further along took the housing off there was already a puddle of oil and it just got worse. :(

If you still like to look at it or I can post photos. The fins ain't too bad just has a sharp lip on the inlet side.

Though I have welded the internal gate shut.

Did you remove the turbine housing when you welded the internal gate shut?
Depending if it was just a quick tack weld or a full flapper weld, the heat probably damaged it.
Yes I know its a turbo, but a turbo usually has oil and coolant running through it when its operating.

Not good, as Tim said it most likely would have to go back to them, with no guarantee of repair (free of charge)

not sure if its of any help but I have a turbo for sale :p its good too

I've emailed (29/05/12) them detailing what has happen and I am not ain't happy with the quailty turbo. I also asked for a replacement at least but if I don't get anything I will probably never shop there again and not recommend them to anyone.

Will update on progress if any.

Did you run a restrictor? The stock feed has one inbuilt. also, do you still have balance shafts? If not, did you port the filter housing?

Extremepsi isn't likely to do anything without having the turbo to check over. They would need to lodge a claim with Their supplier who will require proof that it is not a user fault.
Did you drain the oil yet to check for contaminants? Did you check for any at the first oil change after the engine build?

Sorry to ask all these questions but mitsi turbos very rarely fail because of a build quality issue.
You might want to take it to mtq to look over, at least that might rule out any outside cause for the bearings and seals crapping out.

No use blaming the supplier without knowing ALL of the facts behind the failure and having a direct go at them and making demands is NOT the way to get them to go out of their way to help out (I'm in wholesale myself)

The braided oil was for 1g engine also from extreme psi.

I have removed both balance shaft. though what do u mean by port the filter housing? Reading upon diy on vfaq I dont recall it.

I'm aware they will have a routine for these incidents. So they don't get scammed.

As for oil its still on is first taste of oil and I have pumped oil through out the engine before running over. Engine and turbo has had less than 1000km.

I've rebuilt the motor. Everything internally in the motor is brand new except block and crank. As it is built now all was put together/ran same time. All was purchase from extreme psi as well.

I will put my 14b back on and see how it goes. Being the original turbo from the half cut I got its looks better than the 16g lol

Usually you get it upto operating temp after the first start then change the oil and check for any problems.
This tells you if there is any crap that has washed up if the block.
How long did you spend cleaning te block before assembly? In particular all of the oil galleries.
If I was you I'd be pulling the sump off to check the bearings for signs of damage, if your lucky they will be ok. At a guess I'd say that there was swarf in the oil and that killed the turbo bearings...

Have a look at these links for break in procedures.

I painted the block externally, masked all holes up. Blocked was washed up with degreaser diluted with water beforehand and set to dry. Re surfaced the cylinder holes and oiled up as well everything else when bolting rods, crank, bearings, pistons all together. Manually turning the crank before assembling the head, all was smooth and moving as it should.

but I will remove sump Friday and check up on any swarf

I attacked, my block with a chisel and hammer taking out all loose castings. High oil preassure for sleeve bearing turbos is a good thing no? Running from oil filter housing is ideal isn't it?
