I've plugged all the harness connectors etc back together in the Coupe and when I turn the key to first click, I don't get any reds on the cluster.

The car will start and idle fine, but the cluster shows no sign of life at all, except for the left indicator arrow which remains constantly on. No tach signal, no fuel gauge change - nothing.

I tried another cluster and it's the same thing.

Has anybody got a pic of the EVO1 under dash fuse box and what plugs go where?

I hate electrics - this is the reason I became a Mechanical Engineer instead of an Electrical one... :fuuuuu:

What caused it to happen (what works have you done lately?)

Also, it'll be good to check each fuse one at a time. Pull one out, inspect, replace if required, if not put it back. If that fails, looks for some loose earth connections.

But seeing that it runs and idles etc, and it is only the dash that is being affected, it would have to be a poor earth.

Another thing you can do is pull that cluster out and find the negative wires and see if you can buzz it out to the chassis. Check the resistance also to see if it is a poor earth.

If that seems ok, do the same with the power. See if you are getting a full 12v / 14v. Run a multimetre across the +ve and earth. So black on earth (chassis somewhere clean/no paint) and the red to the pins of the cluster which supplies power.

And just check that your mpi and plugs are nice and tight.

Yep I agree with Baz, usually the same thing happens with a near dead flat battery, however, your car is starting up. Theres a bad earth there for sure I bet.

Did you earth out the 2 main earth straps under the dash to the support panel? (behind cluster). They are white flat plastic units that screw into the bar with 10mm bolts. See pic

What did you do exactly Shayne? did you remove the loom and put it back in?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll have to take another look at it this upcoming Saturday when I get back from Adelaide.

I didn't remove the loom at all, just unplugged it from the underdash fuse box and tucked it all out of the way when I had the 'cage welded in.

should go without saying but, was the battery disconnected before welding started on the cage,

Yeah, battery, ECU, fusebox, all of them were removed entirely from the car before welding started. We tucked all the wiring harnesses out of the way and the fabricator told me he put an asbestos sheet over them when he was welding to protect them from spatter. I've inspected them and couldn't see any evidence of damage.

i'm thinking an earth wire was accidentally cut/stretched when you moved the wiring out of the way for the welding....

I did the "old reach around" on the dash to make sure the the plugs were pushed firmly into the back of the cluster.

Worst case scenario - I'm going to have to borrow a GPS unit so I can drive it back from Shepparton and know what speed I'm travelling at!! I need to get the car home this weekend and unfortunately I don't have a tow car and trailor, so driving is the only option.

I don't have the tacho working, but I did just realise that the speedo is mechanically driven! DOH!! So it'll be fine.

have you got the blue and black plugs the wrong way? it's weird that it starts and doesn't show anything.. i assume by georges comment that the tach works... the speedo is mechanical from the gbox.. that should work, car on or off..

if you get a test light, you should be able to find the door open pin, see if there is power coming up the loom. obviuosly when you turn the key to on, other wires for check engine, oil, park will all power up, so if you can locate them, see if it's in the right orientation, (you should be able to trace the lights on the cluster to a pin on the loom)

Well, I've fixed the issue of the reds and tacho not working, now the cluster (which WAS illuminating when the lights were turned on...) is NOT working!?!?!?

I've changed all the globes in the back of the cluster, next step is to check the fuses. What a PITA.

Sounds like one of the white plugs that goes to your fusebox isnt plugged in properly Shane? Remove the driver's speaker and look for the 2 big plugs that go to the fusebox, plus there should be a 3rd little white plug on its own that doesnt go to the fusebox, just to another free plug there somewhere.
