All those pics are from "the turbolent years" yeah? Great series. Ive got the set of them aswell.

Yeah the texaco cheaters. Their fuel octane rating was off the bloody charts if i remember correctly.

There's also a bit somewhere in that dvd. 5 sierra's are coming down conrod straight, take their foot off the accelerator at the same time and flutter from most of them is awesome.

Great pics mate.

Cheers,
Nick

I vaguely remember that Sierra series, i even had a toy replica of the texaco car.

What i dont get, is why would they have a Sierra series in aus, when they were never even sold here?

BRING BACK THE TURBO TO SPICE THINGS UP AGAIN!!!

Things got interesting back then until they decided to go to the 2 make series - its fookin boring now. So much so that I dont even watch it every year anymore  pft, and they call it the "Great Race"....

cosworth

Great post
Worked for an importer many years ago who bought in sierra cosworths in 2wd and awd. I remember the first seriously quick car I ever drove was a 2wd (hatch back shape) black cosworth with ford motor sport livery all over it. Was an apprentice and thought I would use it to go get lunch while the boss was out. Was pouring rain and here I was trying to get 500hp to the ground in the middle of the intersection arms and legs going everwhere how I did not crash i still dont know.
A client of mine now has the ex dick johnston shell racing sierra as part of his collection which he takes to the track every now and again.
The car to this day still has it's boost set at 45psi.

WOW !! That's amazing.
I'd be very reluctant to drive a piece of australian motorsport history.

I would LOVE to find out where the old 4wd Cyborgs used in the 1988-91 mirage cup's are.. (Brad Jones drove one, and won)

Can someone confirm a story I heard.
The poms couldn't believe that Dick Johnson could build a Sierra that was quicker than what they have. So they invited him to race over there. Dick setup up a car purposly built to kick some pommy butt and was sent over.
He raced at Silverstone and broke the record by about 3 seconds.

True or False?

cosworth

Don't qoute me but I think this sounds right I will confirm it though.
Worked with some of his old engineers so i will ask. There was an old story around years ago that Dick had a drive car which was a black hatch and he would take it from the workshop to his house via the Gateway bridge which is quite steep and if the car would not do from memory 130mph by the apex of the bridge the boys would cop it the next day.

i remember readin a article about the rs500's it was in the magazine called speed. had a little section with the group A cars i think. 112kw off boost to 427kw on boost..amazin..

cosworth

Yes Dick did take a car over to silverstone. He qualified 3 seconds quicker and lead the race until the water pump failed never had a water pump fail until then. The race was actually for the tourist trophy.

Because it was GroupA mate which was a world wide series, not the Holden vs Ford show we have now. Look at my web site http://starion.mrbdesign.com.au on the bottom of the page there are some GroupA links.
They even had various capacity classes! I tuned the Corolla that won the 1600 class at Bathurst in 1992.

I really enjoyed the GroupA times so many different cars racing is was fantastic, got to see them all race in person :D Also with the GroupE Starion we often raced as a support race to the main GroupA event.
