Just wondering what everyone gets to a tank, and what tank sizes everyone has? I've seen a few pages around saying the VR4s have 62L tanks, but whenever I fill up no more than 45L goes in, guessing there's a few different sizes out there? Get around 300km to a tank (a lot better than when I had 510s,) which doesn't seem much at all to me. Everything's stock, running factory boost 98% of the time. Anything that could be wrong? It's had a new fuel pump in around five months ago.

next time you fill a full tank. reset ur counter.
then drive as you do and next time you need fuel, note the kms on the counter and how many litres you used to fill back up to full.

this will give an accurate reading on your ineffiency if any.

I get between 420 to 470klms and the re fill is about 46 ltrs.
Ive got a fresh engine with standard injectors standard ecu and a t3 400hp garret ball bearing turbo running 12-13 psi.

Cheers,
Michael.

It all how you drive, i didint believe it when somone told me that. If i fill up on fuel light i get 50-51L in there.
I can get 440 km if i drive like granny. 300 if i thrash it. Normally around 400kms.
Pretty much just an exhaust and a 16G on 14psi.

With 14b id get 320 normally as the smaller turbo spools up easyer and im a bit more cruisy now.

True, a faulty 02 sensor can make it run rich. If running a smaller turbo you'll be on boost more % of the time too which equals more fuel :)

the vr4 with big garret, 560s, cams gets nearly the same as my ggsr n/a, but drive both hard
round 350-400 with the 4 and 450-500 ggsr
and thats not even really low either, have never let any of my cars needle touch the empty line

Go out and belt you car for a tank. Then drive it so it doesnt spool up off at the lights for a tank. I get 100km difference!

Also watch the lights on the dash with the turbo symbol if you want to figure out how the ecu percieves your driving style if you trying to putt putt around. As best i know they are what the computer thinks the turbo is doing based on revs and airflow not actual pressure in the inlet manifold.

Maybe someone else can confirm/ deny this....i'd "assume" if you drive to try keep the lights from lighting up or going past the centre dot, the ecu map will remain in low load points. As it does not think the turbo is producing positive pressure.
Put you foot down more and it thinks the turbo is coming on and moves to the the higher load point settings. i.e richer, more fuel used even if you not full throttle off at the lights.

Thats why i get better fuel economy when i put a 16g on, easyer for me to cruise off at the lights without the turbo spooling up so easy. Best of both worlds really! I get an extra 50 kms on average with the bigger turbo.

A healthy vr4, no matter which turbo it has, should and can get down close to 10 litres/ 100km when cruising at 100 kph (unless the motor is decompressed further than standard or you have nasty cams in there).

I can just get 500kms from a tank in mine and that includes a few laps of QR, a few laps of the local autocross track and some other short closed road tests where you are either on full noise or full brakes.

The water temp sensor and O2 sensors are the two biggest culprits for bad fuel economy when cruising. Boost leaks and a bad tune are the main causes of bad economy when getting it up it.

on my trip back from brisbane christmas last year the vr4 amg got 640km out of each tank approx on the highway. thats with the big 16g 510's im pretty sure the tank is around 55ltrs. having said this also running evo3 afm and a chipped ecu

Alight so something is definitely off. Filled up today, 41L got me 297km. That was pretty placid driving too. Might try throwing an O2 sensor at it first then. Cheers for the replies guys.
