Motorists nabbed in massive overnight blitz

A massive multi-agency operation targeting drunk and dangerous drivers overnight has proved to be a success.
Victoria Police members worked through the night to catch the hoons, and were joined by the EPA, Vic Roads, and Sheriff’s Department, Taxi Directorate, and Immigration officials.
Police working the operation came from the Maroondah, Knox and Yarra Ranges Traffic Management Units, Croydon and Ringwood Uniform and the Automatic Number Plate Recognition unit.
A booze bus was also set up on site.
All vehicles travelling east along the Maroondah Highway, Ringwood were intercepted and breath tested, and road worthy check were conducted on nominated vehicles.
Police initiated the operation to target anti social driving behaviour, drug and alcohol related offences, stolen vehicles and property, un-roadworthy, and unregistered vehicles and vehicles breaching the EPA Act.
The following police results were achieved:
1, 500 breath tests were conducted and three drivers were caught exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol;
Five drivers were driving whilst their licence was disqualified;
Three drivers were unlicensed;
11 vehicles were unregistered;
Six drivers were exceeding the speed limit;
Five vehicles were un roadworthy;
23 Defect Notices were issued; and
35 other traffic offences were detected including failing to wear a seat belt and using a mobile phone whilst driving
Maroondah Traffic Management Unit Leading Senior Constable Mark Squires said it was one of the biggest operations the area had seen and he was pleased with the results.
“The Maroondah Highway is a major thoroughfare that carries hundreds of thousands of vehicles daily through the heart of the area,” Ldg Sen Const Squires.
“Due to the volume of traffic on the highway, we have unfortunately seen a number of serious injury collisions which is why we initiated this level of enforcement.”
