hey guys i am looking to make my vr4 fwd or rwd just need to know what is easier and cheaper to do (fwd most probably) but i just need to know what is involved tryed to seach but couldnt find anything.

why on earth would u do this!!!

AWD is the only thing a VR4 should be! dont go muckin around tryin to make it RWD or the worst of all....FWD!!

buy a car that is already one or the other...dont attempt doing this to a VR4 please!

fwd or rwd

look i didnt ask for criticisum i just asked a question "I" want to do it not you sorry if it sounds harsh but seriously i get this shit all the time its my car my choice. is there a rule against making a vr4 rwd or fwd???

how could u not ask for criticism with this idea! but if u really wanna do it then ur best bet is to drop the whole drive train from the gearbox to the rear driveshefts and then fit a Galant GSR box or cordia turbo one...but the latter requires a new clutch from what i have been told!

if u wanna convert to RWD it would probbably just involve takin out the front driveshafts and welding something up in the box to stop drive to the front shafts....oh and also plug the driveshaft holes up too!

cheers mate!

thanks mate i would really want it rwd :p so i can slide it abit. will it make it a vr2??? lol

My AWD VR4 drives like that  Setup the suspension/chassis, and you will be set 8) (ask most ppl that know my VR4, and they will agree)

yep! i have seen it dorifting a couple of corners up here in darwin after you sold it!!

u would swear its RWD!!

sounds real tough too! :D

why not just get a silvia or a cefiro??

theyre actually set up for stuff like that with their near perfect weight distribution!

does anybody know the weak link in a vr4 when converted to rwd? is it the rear diff or the rear driveshafts?

surely it wouldnt be too hard to do a 9 inch or Hilux rear diff and axel conversion. the stud pattern would change though...

what would be the weak link after that? tailshaft? gearbox?

how does the standard gearbox go transferring power only to the rear and nothing to the front?

Sold it ?

I STILL own it :?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! i so didnt know that!!! LOL!

sorry about that eh!

weaklinks i believe

1. rear drive shafts (3bolt)
2. rear diff
3. transfer case

if u have a 4bolt then
1. rear diff
2. transfer case

if u convert the rear to a 9" then the weaklink will be the tranfercase

i know robbarac is killing xfercases left right and centre.. in awd mode..
i think 3pebbles killed his 4bolt diff when going rwd...

so basically... to run in rwd and not break things, u will probably need to limit the power...

if u made if fwd, it'll hold more power, but u will have no traction..

i went fwd and broke 3 driveshafts on takeoffs...
never tried rwd,

dont forget u will need to lock the centre diff to run it in rwd or fwd... u can do this by either
- spool
- welding stock diff
- vce (viscous coupling eliminator)

good luck mate!

As above but I don't condone it.

You will tear your drivetrain to pieces.

I will make a point of not selling you spare parts due to the sheer idiocy of your idea. Regardless of it being "your car" or "your idea", it's still stupid. Period.

The only successful RWD vr4 in the world I know of has a north-south layout with a sigma turbo box and a tailshaft. The other specs I could go into but frankly, I don't like your idea one bit and i'm not going to give you the information.

You are in my opinion ruining the essence of the vehicle.

You deserve a commodore. Go buy one.

rwd

the car wont have insane power its basically stock and if i make it rwd it will stay like that so it shouldnt break too much should it? any way of strenghtening the transfer case?? and bazeng do you know exactly what to weld i am gettin this done this week:)

if u want it done for fun
i suggest the VCE (get it from tre / slowboy / dsm shop)

basically the VCE will only take about 30 mins to install, and its completely reversable!
you are also able to do it with the box in the vehicle..
it only requires you to open up the first case of the gearbox

only $150ish dollars i believe (from memory)

when ur sick of rwd/fwd, go back to awd, put the viscous coupling back in or leave it in and have a locked centre with awd...

if u weld the centre diff, its not reversable unless u replace the centre diff with another stock unit, it also requires you to remove more stuff from the car, i believe its in the second cover of the gearbox..

the bad thing about the VCE, u still have the weakpoint of the stock centre diff...... hopefully it wont break =)

do a search on VCE or viscous coupling eleminator to learn more...
the yanks use it to DYNO their AWD's on 2WD dyno's....
