Help Support 4GTuner:

i was gonna get one of these until i read this on the add:

You are bidding on a brand new "GATES timing belt for the below models, but for the Lancer EVO, there are 2 models with different prices, please make sure which one is right for your car and be informed about their related prices". A Flying Performance International EXCLUSIVE! This is the one of a kind item that you've been looking for.
T167R Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, 2.0L (4G63) 1996 - On (Camshaft)different price, please ask for pricing

the seller never returned my email on how much it actually is..
so i ended up getting a HKS one..

Mate im pretty sure they are cheaper locally because i was looking them up for myself when i was bored at work. Ill check and get back to you tomorrow night

Its pretty rare for a timing belt to snap just because of the belt itself unless it was worn and past its recommended replacement date. Usually a balance shaft bearing collapses and in turn snaps the balance shaft belt, then in turn gets caught up in the timing belt and snaps the timing belt.

Even with a good non blue racing timing belt as long as you replace it as per manufacturer recommended intervals they are fine. The whole 'blue racing timing belt' thing is nice and all but its not a necessity IMO. I chose a black Gates belt because a lot of their R&D would be put into their non racing belts as well. I suppose at the time I just wanted to pay $300-$350 for a complete new timing belt kit as a step toward reliability rather than just buy one blue racing timing belt and leaving the existing pulleys and bearings in place :p

I have had on 2 occasions where I have installed a Dayco timing belt in 4G63's and the Dayco belts soften and loosen up within a few hundred kms driving! Not that its from improper installation, I'm talking about the flex in the belt between both cam gears (the rest of the belt outside the cam gears are taught).

all oem gates timing belts go under alot of R&D soo they can meet with oem standards

if you have a look at an original timing belt most are actually made by gates

Yeah well i looked it up at work, like its been said there is the T167R.
Theres also the cheaper version the T167.
So make sure if you go ebay they dont sell you the cheaper belt for 180!

Here's what they are worth locally full price.(in perth, cant see it being much diff eastern states)
Its 60-70 depending on supplyer for the T167.
And a T167R is worth around 250 supplyed by rocket ind.

i dont now what suppliers you have in perth but in brisbane you dont need too go through rocket industries too buy a gates racing timingbelt you could buy them through pretty much every supplier that sells gates products

but it might be just a case of lack of suppliers in perth

So EVO-00X, are you saying that you would avoid using Dayco belts?
I'm about to install a complete Dayco timing belt kit on my engine..........

:)

I was just quoting who sold the more expensive one (rocket) as there was only a few who didiit and they came up cheapest, there wasnt much range), the cheaper type there was more variation.
Just posted so he know who not to go to lol
IM sure though you could get it much cheaper somewhere else tho.
Prices were an indication of what they are full price if you walkied into a main stream shop and didnt shop around

"I" am avoiding using Dayco timing belts again because of what I've experienced with the last two. Dayco is a good brand and Im not bagging them out as many people dont have issues with them. Just that I'm sticking with Gates as the last engine I built used a Gates and didnt have the same problem.

.

So in you opinion the cheaper gates belts do the job just as well?
I have read some articles before and some people have the opinion that expensive timeing belts arnt much differnt to normal ones.
Yet alot of companys claim 3X strength, durability, ect...
Dunno what the comparison is, maybe to the industry standard?

Has anyone used or had a good look at the standard spec gates ones vs the racing one?
Much differnce?
