hi guys
posting for my mates gsr
he has bought a gearknob which has no thread and just uses allen key screws. he does not want a standard gsr or evo gear knob he wants to use this one

the gearknob itself comes with a spacer, which fits nice and snug inside the actual gearknob, but is very loose still when placed on the gsr gear stick shaft.
with the allen key screws tightened as much as possibly progressively and evenly one at a time over and over, only two screws will end up hitting the shaft to keep it tight, and the third wont reach because there is too much gap

this ends up making the gear knob come loose every drive....
he tried drilling into his gearstick with a small metal drill bit, but it keeps slipping off, any other ideas to get this mounted? im sure someone out there uses a gear knob with allen key screws

bodgy picture attached for an idea of what it looks like lol

Is it a momo knob??

The kit should come with about 3 different plastic adapter bits, which go onto the shifter before the knob goes on...

perhaps he has the wrong sized one?

longer screws might help also.....

or if there is no adaptors, try wrapping some electrical tape around it instead, it should do the trick

Cut a piece of garden hose and use that, ive done that to my other lancer and works atreat, hasnt come loose yet

You will never get it to sit nicely, these gear knobs are all crap, I had one on my old Celica, was always loose, tried drilling as you mentioned, tried loctite in the allen bolt threads, was always coming loose, in the end I peeled the sticker from the centre and drilled down the centre of the gear lever and tapped out a thread so I could put a screw through the centre of the knob, then did it up FT with loctite. and put the sticker back over. That is why I want a leather wrapped EVO knob to put on my GSR, as I know I will be dissapointed with any aftermarket POS.

Hrm lucky i read this thread, was thinking of a momo gear knob. Hrm. Maybe try double sided tape to thicking the gear stick and then tighten the allen key locks? Also as dre said, longer thread locks?

yeah im just gonna tell him to give up on these crap aftermarket ones

i reckon the first ralliart knob on that page in white looks awesome

thanks guys

I had the same issue when I fitted my plain leather one It also uses the allen key screws. I also wanted something shorter: If I remember correctly, I hack sawed the top section of the actual stick off, (the narrower part) and then the knob fitted (used some masking tape around it to help it sit a little more firm).

The supplied allen key screws with a "blunt" point kept slipping but my sharp pointed ones have not moved in about 2 years.

where did you get your sharp ended allen bolts
would Bunnings have it? also do they sell longer ones?!
Thanks
bunnins have got everything :D
and....the lowest prices are just the beginning

The blunt ones were some I had lying around, and the sharp ended ones came with it. Not sure if you might be able to get them from bunnings ? Otherwise there is a place in Ringwood that have nuts and bolts ( near heatherdale road)

evocpe is on the money - good work.
instead of garden hose, we used some hose leftover from an oil catch can install (maybe around 10mm in diameter) and stuffed it inside the gear knob and it was a tight fit onto the stick. anyway my mate said its been sturdy since hasnt come loose
