Ahoy there,

Just curious, went to pull apart a W5M33 gearbox today and im wondering about removing the lock nuts for the input shaft/
intermediate gears.

Just wondering what can i do if i dont have the bit (MD998802) that goes over the spline on the input shaft?? :|

Stupid question im sure but im curious what other people have used, as i know a couple of people here have done it like alex (evopwr)

There's 2 ways, both are on www.vfaq.com (with pictures)

option a) shift the box into reverse, then push out the pin that holds the 5th gear shift fork, and slide the fork up so 5th gear is engaged as well.

option b) put a copper coin between the 2 cogs of 5th gear (it's hard enough to stop the gears turning, but soft enough not to damage them at all).

Option c) Use an old clutch disc with a length of aluminium bolted to it to hold the input shaft still. Same concept as the Mitsi manual but cheaper :)
No chance of chipping teeth as us Aussies don't have copper coins anymore.

Yup

Option C) get a 36 mm socket tomorrow and ive got a clutch and a sacrificial socket to weld to it as well :)

Much appreciated guys :)

I have a gearbox in pieces in the shed and was thinking that the input spline size looked close the the output spline size on the old mid seventies corollas I used to rally. so I tried the shaft in an old tailshaft that i was going to chuck out......perfect fit.

just slide a bar into the uni joint holes and your laughing.

lol Brian!
Marc, just make sure you have a suitable breaker bar handy mate, those nuts are bloody tight!
And I hope the inside of yours doesn't look like mine did when I got it apart! It lasted almost 600kms after a rebuild :(
