Hey, I have a 1989 GSR Galant that needs a new gearbox.

I am in Tassie so finding parts locally is a bit of an issue.

What I'd like to know is: What kind of gearbox will fit in the car and where are places to look (like web sites or something)?

The car is a manual and I am positive it has the stick gearbox in it now but the previous owner was a bit rough with it so second doesn't work properly and it has issues with first and reverse :(

I am somewhat new to the world of cars as well so I apologize in advance for newbie questons/answers. ;)

Keep your gearbox mounts. For fwd the boxes I know are galant, and cb lancer boxes all bolt to the 2L and then use your galant gearbox mounts. Some have different ratios. I prefer the 1.6L box ratios better takin off speed. Not as good top speed.

Ok, thanks for that!

I read here that you can get a 1988 to 91 Magna gearbox to fit but you need the flywheel. Does that mean you need the Magna flywheel or keep the Galants?

I fitted a 90 magna gearbox to my old galant gsr.use the magna flywheel and clutch, because the flywheel is about 10mm bigger diameter, also the clutch is bigger as well.Use your galant mount.
everything else from galant fits well.the gearbox is a tight fit because it is physically bigger and you will find the galant will need more revs to take off because the magna gear ratios are higher. The old 2.6 motors only revved to 4500rpm with power so they changed the gears.i could get 100km out of 2nd gear with my magna gearbox in the galant at 6500rpm.

I don't know if you have 2 piece passenger drive shaft or not, and I don't know if it affect you, but I recently read that a sonata gearbox spaces the driveshafts rearwards slightly and it was said that you need to use a 1 piece shaft.
I only say this because turbovr4 mentioned the magna box is slightly larger and I think the magna and sonata boxes are the same.

Hey man, I just wanted to know with the Magna gearbox and clutch, is it a TP Magna or a different one?

Any magna 5speed gearbox from 1986 TN model to 1991 TP model is the correct one to use.I think the gearbox from memory is called a KM210.Also I forgot to tell you to get that sandwich plate between the gearbox and block, I almost forgot to get that as well because it has the different mount holes for the stater motor. With the flywheel being 10mm bigger they had to move the starter motor 5mm out more but the gearbox to motor bolts are the same boltup.
remember that these gearboxex are from the wedge shaped magna. But DON'T get the 1985 TM magna box because it has a vacuum operated 5th gear, and the shifter works back to front.

Magna clutch from TN to TP are the same and correct clutch to use.the correct clutch will be 225mm clutch disc and it is a slim style clutch pressure plate.the correct flywheel from memory will have the ring gear recessed in the flywheel as well.Be careful that you DON'T get a 1985 TM magna clutch, they are only 215mm like galant gsr

Galant GSR are a one piece drive shaft which suits the magna gearbox as well

The pictures below are when I fitted a vr4 motor to a magna, with the magna gearbox being used so ignore the drive shaft(it is ny magna adapter shaft, Galants dont need one)but the reason for the picture is that vr4 and galant GSR block are the same boltup, so this picture shows what the magna box looks like and how big it is on the galant motor. When i got rid of that car i used that gearbox on my galant GSR with the normal GSR motor, thats why i knew it fitted.

Oh man you are a legend! That answers all my questions perfectly! Sounds like you have already done what I want to do B) (I am eventually going to try a vr4 engine in my GSR).
