Hi

My gearbox from Evo Nats last year has finally been dis-assembled and the only part not destroyed is the case and a few others.

Can someone please advise what gearbox I would be buying parts from at Jacks Transmissions and also what they would recommend for the track. I was hoping that I could pick up the whole unit and just get someone to put it all together.

Current costing on replacing just what is broken is $2500 AUD from Ralliart.

Thanks

Depends on the type of gearbox you are after....
The U.S. W5M33 1G & 2G parts dont share much at all with the EVO I-III boxes.
They're very similar to GSR and VR4 boxes although they may be able to get you EVO parts if you ask them.
I had a bad experience with Jacks last year where after 7 weeks waiting for the parts to arrive we opened the box and found 2nd hand bearings and shafts.
After some complaining they denied it. After some more complaining and photos they eventually re-issued us with new bearings and shafts.
I was not a happy camper but hey, in the end they made right of the problem but I havent dealt with Jacks since.

I much prefer to deal with Tim at TMZ Performance.
He's the only guy I trust to get my gearbox parts for me time and time again and he's never let me down... :)

But as Rob has mentioned, you need to know why your gearbox let go? how did it let go? what were you doing at the time? what type of torque and power are you putting out? what are your useage intentions?
Youre remedy might be investing that $2500 into another gearbox, a dogbox, or perhaps an auto conversion.

It let go at Eastern Creek climbing up the back hill at full power in 4th gear.

It was the original gearbox and had 130 odd thousand kms on it.

Heat will bethe killer in any new box that you build. I'd look at an oil cooler setup for it when you get it built.
Tim from tmz is top bloke! I'd buy from him in a second.
You could jus look at buying a pre assembled pair of sticks and new centre diff etc but it will get very expensive!
Who is putting it together for you up here?

ive had 4th let go on the dyno a few times and its the weak point when making alot of torque.
I suggest on investing in a set of dog gears and you wont look back. You can get straight cut gears or helical for a more streetable feel etc.
Its more expensive to start with but you will break another 4th gear.

Yep 4th and even 3rd gear intermediate will strip under high load/torque because of the pretty weak size tooth size. It happens quite often and the teeth just strip off and spit out all over the gearbox internals causing a real mess. When you start to strip them you have to either back off on the torque [pfffffft] or look a getting dog gears for the race track.
Ive attached some pics of stripped 3rd and 4th gears.... munch munch munch munch. Rob would have seen this all too often over the years lol

Around what torque/ power / size turbo with what boost; are you guys stripping 3rd and 4th?
That's the only thing holding me back form building a stroker rather than a 2L.

Luck plays a part too lol. Ive concluded that in a straight line chances of 3rd or 4th letting go arent anywhere near as high as when under load on a dyno or coming out of corners under load with a front LSD fitted.
In fact the last 3 gearboxes that stripped them were just that. One was a 2 litre 300hp rally Evo III with viscous LSD that munched 4th; one was a 2 litre 390kw at rear wheels AWD coupe running a Cusco Tarmac gear 35/65 split and Kaaz front LSD (munched 3rd with a car load of people after a drift at Powercruise earlier this year lol. The owner likes to have a bit of fun but Ive put a welded centre in it now so he can run it rwd with more power); and another was a stroker on the dyno making around 340-350kw atw that munched 4th relatively easily during a run. Each car has varying power and used in different conditions.
I have a friend also running a 340kw atw 2.0 then a 2.3 stroker Evo II and gives his GSR gearbox a flogging and hasnt killed his box yet. The interesting factor = get this, he doesnt run front or rear LSD's.

I have around 220Kw at the wheels and mine went. It was an old gearbox though.

It went before I had a LSD fitted.
