gearbox issue?

Lately I've been getting a whirring sound kinda sounds like a plane or supercharger when i'm cruising, it seems to get louder the faster i go and it doesnt sound to healthy so i'm limiting my use of the car. sounds like its coming from the GB or the transfer case just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and is it something like a bearing? or worse? any help to put my mind at ease would be much appreciated.

I had something similar in a previous car (Mazda 323 4wd). Turned out to be a stuffed bearing that allowed to much end float of the gear cluster and 5th gear was grinding its self into the gearbox housing.

May not be the same thing in your case but I would get it checked asap.

Maybe dump fluids and look for a abnormal amount of metal bits.

does clutch in or out change the noise? all gears? accelerate, decelerate? more info please

I had something similar in a previous car (Mazda 323 4wd). Turned out to be a stuffed bearing that allowed to much end float of the gear cluster and 5th gear was grinding its self into the gearbox housing.

May not be the same thing in your case but I would get it checked asap.

i just changed the fluids yesterday GB was all clean looked fine, there was abit of gunk build up in the transfer case but none of it metallic.

You remembered to put new fluid back in??

Cleanish fluid is a good sign though.

yeah its louder when gear is engaged the faster i go the louder it seems to get, when i pop it out of gear its still there but it gets quieter.
I' starting to think it might be clutch/flywheel related?

I thought that at one stage. Changed clutch and it was still there. Gear box ended up seizing where if I put it In gear as I lifted the clutch the engine would slow and stall. Mind u the noise happened for like a year

first make sure all the revisions have been done on the car.. clutch fork and ball.. clutch pedal box.. (yoke is another one)

has the transfer case always had oil in it?

G/box could have a dropped bearing as is common now a days in untouched old Evo GSR g/boxs.. lots of ks

any chance it could be a wheel bearing? A lot of these coming through in the past 6 months on the CCs.

Either that or diff whine

now that you mention it when i reverse and turn left or right i get a high pitched squeal sometimes.. duno if that helps with anything
