Hey guys got a weird one for you.

The shift in my E3 is the standard Mitsu notichy feel that we all love, but I have now found something odd.

Usually my day to day driving involves various roads and freeways(about 40km in total) all straight line driving nothing exciting, so over the week my box feels much more notchy.
I have noticed the last few times I have given it a good driving on twisty roads(I mean 10+ kms of constant winding) it has been far less notchy for the following few days and I cant for the life of me think why. In both cases (day-to-day drive and fun-drive) the car will see 7,000 rpm so its not that a good thrashing gets it flowing better.

Relevant specs:

Standard clutch
Meek shifter bushes
Gearbox oil changed 2,000kms ago(this didnt change a thing)

Any ideas guys?

You've probably just got everything moving nicely and the oil flowing Andrew. If you're doing a bit of spirited driving and are changing gears alot (as you probably would during twisty driving) then you're engaging and disengaging the synchros alot more, probably giving the gearbox oil a better chance to get inbetween them and the gear teeth.

I couldn't really tell you for sure why you'd be feeling a difference, but that's about all that makes sense to me!

I had shifter issues in my RVR recently. Was worse when it was cold. I changed the fluid for OEM DiaQueen fluid (last fluid was 15,000km old Castrol) replaced the slave cylinder and fully bled the system and it feels like brand new.

Try bleeding your slave cylinder and/or for $37.50, maybe try replacing it?

What Oil did you use?

and fluid heated up to optumim temp range will make it shift smoother

this wont pin point what the cuase is

If you want to slit the box and your capable theres a you tube vid +the pdf gearbox manual

Try some good quality Redline from Oil World in Herald St Cheltenham (cheaper than Burson and they give car club members a discount) . This can sometimes smoothen things up. Its sticky, yet still a good viscosity (and the lifetime is a heap longer than normal oil).

Lucas also make an oil additive. I have never tried it but my brother has it in his Subaru and he says its ok, (Subarus always felt like trucks to me)

How many kms on your gearbox?

Yeah listen to Legume and put some of Redline's special "The Powder"fiction modifier in your gearbox ;) just dont plan on keeping your car for along time.

Redline and modifiers tend to clog the oil systems in our boxes over time which in the long run kill them.

You'd want to make sure you run something GL-4 spec. Do a search and you'll find a massive topic on oils. Have a good read mate.

I personally use oem mitsu spec DIAQUEEN.

Keep in mind, the mitsu box isn't the smoothest made. They are quite notchy anyway

The Redline (without modifiers added) is a fully synthetic GL-4 spec oil. I know someone who has had it in his car for a fair while and had no issue. When we removed the driveshafts recently, the oil we drain beforehand was still in great condition. It quietened his gearbox substantially

Thanks for the heads up bazeng on the clagging issue of modifiers. My brothers planning to get rid of his Liberty soon anyway.

Lucas also do a fully synthetic modifier aswell as the mineral one.

I always thought my Mirage was one of the best Ive driven

if using Redline stay away from shockproof in the box, use straight MT90 or a MT90/MTL mix. Heavy shockproof goes in the diff's. This is what shep reccomends, i rekon he knows a think or two.

The thing with SHEP is, he probably rebuilds his box after every outing.

Good for performance but for longevity?? who knows.

i have tried shockproof, MTL and MT90 the best by for is the MTL MT90 mix. i spent $120 on fluids in two weeks but driving a car with crap shifting sucks. also adj the clutch too, it can help to appoint BG syncoshift is good aswell. if you want to launch your car then shockproof IS AWESOME!!!

+1for a spirited drive to get things nice and smooth.
As for what driveline oil to use, any of the major brand - SAE spec whatever the handbook says and not something making miracle claims.

agreed, helped me shock the centre diff to bits!

crap oil, only for the reason we dont need it, and once you use it its a pain to get out of the gearbox.

im not talking about his own box in the drag car, but the countless costomer box's he rebuilds.

What ever Shep reconds lol

Time and time again I have seen disaster strike in Mitsu gearboxes with Redline's Famous Shockproof crap

As for their other Non "Powder Aditive Oils" are all OK its the shockproof that you will get stung with, and after all this time If people want to belive Shockproof ie "The Powder" works let them! let them use it................ but you all should know better by now ;)

& PRICE POINT FOR THE SHOCKPROOF CRAP IE "THE POWDER" = YOU MIGHT AS WELL BEND OVER AND LET THEM GIVE IT TO YOU FIRST.

I am about to pull apart an evo 3 box that Ive had for quite some time. Its been sitting on the rack in the shed for about 18 months since I drained the oil.....Alien blood. one thing Ive noticed about shockproof is it sticks like shit to a blanket. looking inside the end of the box there is still a liberal coating of blue. I havent got as far as the gear set yet but It will be interesting to see what the synchros are like.
