For years the only cars i knew of that used balance shafts were mitsubishi and porsche.with people that remove the balance shafts, its personal choice.I cant talk for the high horsepower crowd because ive never been there but in the small upgrade area ive never seen a big upgrade in power with removing them.
As far as noticing when there removed i am picky and can tell.if the balance shafts are setup correctly and the motor is in good condition you should be able to literally put a glass of water on top at 6000rpm and it will barely move.i have a 2008 cj lancer and i find that the new generation mitsi motor is a lot harsher than any 4g63 and you dont want to rev it past 5000rpm because i can feel it.But again some people would never notice small thing like that.
and as far as balanced bottom ends are concerned it gave the car faster revs as well as smoothness.if it was badly done from factory then you wouldnt be able to rev very high.

I've always removed balance shasta on my builds using the stubby shaft from mitsu. So far so good. Mind you I never rev over 7.5k.

Chase, I'll have to pursuade you otherwise in the meantime if you are thinking about rebuilding your engine

George, that's because Group N cars were limited to factory engine internals as the class is for production cars with virtually stuff all mods allowed, and Group A cars are highly modified production cars which were allowed heaps of modifications. Like you, competition engines would benefit without them.

I tried to talk him out of it last night Rob lol

He just doesn't want the car to be rough, he says if Mitsu didn't need them in the car they wouldn't have thrown them in

Sounds like someone else we all know LOL

I removed mine mainly because its 1 less thing to go wrong, last thing i want is the balance belt to snap ant interfere with my timing belt... don't wanna think about it

interesting point, talking to simon podwoski (spelling) from morpowa here in SA, they used to run there GSR with 4g63 and made several sub 10 second passes with it even with out gas. he said he doesnt remove the shafts from his engines unless asked for, the engine they ran in there GSR still retained them. just said to run a good belt on it like a gates blue or something like.
