What are the bad things you have heard about them?
Most of the guys I know with stand alone computers in there Evos, have had problems that leave their cars running like shit. I think for track use, where you are on full throttle most of the time , stand alone is the way to go, but if the car is mainly driven on the road and they are not setup perfectly, dramas can be just around the corner., unless you are a competent tuner yourself.

Oh, and I could not care less if the guy buys a E-Manage or not. He was asking people of their experinces with them, not just heresay.

I had a haltech E6K in my starion.....
Worked fine.
(12.4 @ 109MPH on street tyres, in full street trim) :)

From personal experience, and also refering to an article in one of the 4's magazines...(I also had a Ford KB 2 door Laser I dropped a E5 turbo into, and used an EMS)

The stand alone ECU's in the $1,100 to $1,500 price bracket are fairly comparable in features, and operation. Cheaper than this, and it's probably a waste of money, and more expensive units are more likely to lean towards high resolution programming (per 1 rpm increments for example) for top end drag, and track use, not necessary for street use, and more complicated than for what you need it to do.

Now, some people could nit-pick, and say brand x does 250rpm increments in tuning, and brand y does 100 rpm increments.... In the big scheme of things, you aren't likely to feel those differences on the road.

But what it really boils down to is finding a tuner who knows what they are doing, and using the unit they suggest, because they are familiar with that brand and know their way around their chosen system(s)...

Find the good tuner!, then worry about the system after talking to them.

(For example piggyback units like the Apexi FC and tuner mentioned earlier in this post..... If it's true he has installed and tuned over 100, then you can bet he knows them back to front, might be worth considering...)

Don't chose a unit because it has more features.... Get one with a good reputation, with the features you need (maybe you want a boost controller built in, as I had) and a good tuner you trust.

Hope this helps you out.
