Headgasket?

Help Support 4GTuner:

Well to start it off.

About a week ago i blew my bottom radiator tank. I have no idea why it blew and i still dont to this day and thats possibly the cause behind all of this. So what would make a radiator build up so much pressure that it acutally burst a tank? (mind you they are plastic)

Anyways today i changed radiators to one that i dont think leaks (havent pressure tested it yet). I also changed thermostats, but i couldnt get a mitsubishi evo 1-3 one so i got a Te Magna one which is identical in size etc.. and should do the trick.

So i fitted this and started her up.. the radiator still didnt pressurize.. tho the top hose is hot and the bottom hose is not which leads me to think that the thermostat isnt doing its job.. but how can that be when its new? I doubt i installed it incorrectly cos there is only one real way to install it.. so im really stumped.

Anyways i thought if i took it for a drive the system might pressurize itself and it would all be fine.. So i take off and hit fullboost in 2nd gear (about 18psi) before it gets there it kind of jolts.. when it did that i stopped boosting it and drove normally home..

Now if the radiator doesnt leak.. the thermo stat is new.. then what the hell is it?

I still havent seen any milky kind of oil in the dipstick or the cap..

Im stumped!!! I might just drop it off at Darrens (AFAS) tomorrow for them to work it out for me!

does water flow through the block okay?

if u stick a hose and blast water through the top, doesn it come out of the bottom pipe???

try no thermostat, see if both hoses get hot this time...

Could be as simple as your radiator cap is rooted. When I had a Vr4, I had a problem of it pumping coolant into the overflow. I inspected the cap, and it wasn't that good. I then replaced it with a newy, and was then good as gold.

As far as the 117 mph, I hope you were not still in 4th gear. If you were, I doubt your drivetrain is stock evo. My Evo 3 is pulling 7000rpm at 160kmh in 4th, according to my gauges. 120 in 3rd at those revs also.
According to my gearing, you would have crossed the traps at 8190rpm in 4th gear, and I think Evo 3 are very slightly higher geared than evo 1

remove your spark plugs n cranck over your car... if its a head gasket it might spray out some water,,, if none comes out get a mechanic to COMPRESSURE test it... but when u get that done... take the radiator cap off fill the water all the way to the top, then comp test it... if the water in the radiator Bubbles in any way its a head gasket....

anyways before u said u had creamy stuff in the motor n the dip stick... the car might have got hot n cracked the head... after a while the head might have KINDA repaired itself but heat... the crack will fix cause the block will expaind from the heat...

last of all... is it using much water a week??? hope all is good man n best of luck...

qiksilvr3: yer i was still in fourth and yes it is genuine evo 1 gearing! i spoke to the guy who rebuilt the car from scratch.. funny enough he is the mechanic i take my car to.. so he would be the one to know.. its all stock genuine evo 1 gearing.. i cnat remember what rpm i crossed the line at either but i guess ill find out later when i go out again.

in regards to the car not pressurizing.. ive had enuff of it and dropped it off at AFAS for them to work it out.. but they think the signs point to a radiator problem.. so yer we will see by the end of the day.

Took it down to AFAS so that Darren could check it out this morning. He drove me back to the shop where i took my parents car home.

Heard back in the afternoon after they had done all the other cars that were prebooked before mine. So the conclusion is.. no headgasket problem.. no water pump problem...

Thermo fans dont switch on!!! LOL its so simple...

Thanks to the guys and Darren at AFAS for the work.. Always seem to impress!

My car has not had the thermofan even fitted to the back of the radiator for about 18mths. Only the condensor fan works. I don't have overheating problems. Even racing around Mallala.
I would be making sure your rad cap is A1 aswell.

You're joking... I thought you would have noticed if the thermo fans were switching on or not - simple as

get some old bits from the wreckers (magna)
they should be the same ... the evo should have the sensor, just rewire the relay pack.. otherwise, i've got some thermo sensors which u can use if u want
