Morning all from the home of the Evo, sushi and bizarre tentacle pornography: Japan! Have been living in Okinawa in southern Japan since mid-2004 and an original gangster Evo 1 GSR owner for the past couple of years. Car is primarily used as a daily driver, but I drag it whenever there are tournaments on (at the moment my best time is an 11.68s 1/4 mile on surface more akin to ice skating).

Just blown piston number 3 though running 1.65-1.85bar on stock internals and so am in the process of pricing up parts for a rebuild. Anyway, that's about it from me except for a couple of pictures. Hope to chat to guys soon in the forums and I know a couple of things about the early Evos so might be able to help out or hinder some of you! Also, a little more info on my car and its upgrades over on my own page here.

By stock internals, I should say that is a bit of a lie. But ARP headstuds and a HKS headsgasket is the only non-standard "internal".

And the piston was finally blown after doing over 200,000km, which is a pretty good showing IMO!

Welcome to the club....11z on stock internals after 200 clicks fuck no complaints there!

Oh yeah, Japan does have som weird pornos LoL....Thank god they make great cars though

Hi ya! Welcome! Cool car you got there. Whats parts availability like for the older EVO's in Japan now days?

Thanks man. Am not setting myself up as a vendor or anything but if you've anything specific you want to get hold of, I can have a look around. I usually mail order parts in from mainland Japan, but the place I go through can get most things.

Very nice mate!
welcome to the club.
what turbo are you running?

Am running a T04B 50-trim. Am probably getting close to maxing the thing out but am trying to resist picking up a 35R at the moment.

You've obviously not seen much of it then! Not much associated with cars though (not like exhaust pipe sex or vibrators attached to pistons or anything like that, but with cars in the background). Maybe there's a niche I should exploit.

Labour work will be minimal (just some beer money for friends) as we're going to take the head off and see how the damage is this coming weekend. Hopefully no tuning shop will be required for the rebuild unless something goes wrong.

Yeah welcome Dave I actually posted your engin bay pic on e'oz as it fit the criteria = perfect shot of everything.

Well, after what seems like an age (due to my lack of skills and lack of tools) we finally got the head off the car. Didn't look in bad shape, and even piston 3 looked ok at a glance, but then we looked a little closer and found exactly what was causing the problem. Take a look for yourself:

Yup, it looks like the piston has melted or something to cause it to do that. Looks like there's around 2-3mm between the piston and the cylinder wall. Am betting the ringlands have gone and that will be visible once the piston comes out. Don't know what caused the piston to go like that; maybe detonation and I didn't notice the CEL flashing in the Okinawan sunlight, or possibly running lean for a split second if the meth didn't start up as planned.

There also looks to be a tiny bit of scoring on the cylinder wall as you can see below, but hopefully we'll be able to get that out with a honing tool. It doesn't seem too deep but will only find out when we start to hone.

So I'm going to order a new piston and rings (am going to try to just get rings for that piston but Mitsubishi only seem to want to sell a whole set of rings for 4 pistons and not for one individual piston). There are 3 standard Mitsu sizes for pistons but I believe it's the A-type piston that I need. Need to do a bit more research into headgaskets as to whether I go MLS or just the standard one. You're all probably screaming MLS but it depends what kind of finish I can get from my head after cleaning it with some parts cleaner and Scotchbrite. Due to the lack of machine shops on island if there are any significant marks I might even consider dropping back to a stock one for now. They've held a lot of power with DSMs and would cope with a non-mirrored finish. Plus once I'm on the road I need this to be as reliable as possible until I find out whether my future is in Japan or not.

Will report back when I've any more news but will probably be in a week or 2 when the transfer case is dropped and the piston pulled out.

The rough surface on the pistons, is that likely to be carbon build up or is it pitting of the pistion from detonation occuring in that area of the piston/flame front?
Ive seen flakey carbon on pistons before but it look like tiny holes. Like what beads off and ends up on spark plugs (the salt look from tiny ball of metal i mean) when its detonating?
And it looks to be worse in the damaged piston then the others.
IM just intersted, im sure someone on here could look at it and say.

That's a good question, and I can see some of the same markings on piston number 2 on the right hand side of that first photo. Anyone know the answer?

lol... wierd porn... kinda like the latest Japanese game called RAPEPLAY which is banned in several countries across the world :)
