Help Emissions Test on a GSR

Has anyone got any advice when going for a emissions test on a 1.8 GSR?? does a larger front mount make much of a difference and what can be done to reduce the emissions out put on the day of the test??

if most things on the car are standard you should be pretty much ok..........but do some searches on what level of test is being done. you may find you will be ok. and at worst a new cat required

things that could be done before the test to get the best result ...........
new plugs........maybe leads.....just to get the best possible spark for complete burn
clean air filter....or new.....
clean injectors .........so there are no dribbly ones to cause a rich mixture.

make sure you dont have any exhaust leaks

As mentioned a stock GSR should have no problems passing the IM240 PROVIDED THAT your catalytic converter is in excellent condition. If its several years old it WILL be a good idea to change it for a new ceramic core item bfore the test. The IM240 goes for 4 minutes. The first test is a warm up test to get your cat converter heated up so its begins to work properly. Its basically a test run and you get a print out etc of it BUT it doesnt count as the proper test. The second test is the one that counts!!. After a couple of minutes on the rollers your cat and 02 sensor should be hot enough to function properly. I recommend ceramic core cats over metal cores when it comes to emissions as they heat up quicker and could be the difference between a pass or fail. If you are running a stock ECU and air flow meter then ensure you have a BOV that vents back into the intake system and not externally as this will effect your emissions. If youve got an aftermarket ECU and MAP sensor it makes no difference at all if you have an external venting BOV. At the end of the test youll be given 2 printouts. Ensure the paperwork is signed by the RTA/EPA officer who is conducting the test and that your vehicle's rego, chassis number and engine number etc are recorded on the sheet as well. The larger intercooler wont make any difference at all... the regulation and EPA stipulate that when you make any modificaton to the induction system of a car you have to prove that it meets emissions. An upgraded intercooler counts as one of these mods so thats why you need to prove emissions over a stock GSR item.

If for some reason you fail the test, I recommend taking your car to Matt at The Hitman in Penrith, which isnt far from the emissions testing facility, to have him look at your car. Matt's probably the best of the best when it comes to emissions testing as he regularly uses the facility for many customer cars (from Ferarris to Evos and old school to rotories etc) and can tune them to meet the corresponding ADR emissions standard your car falls into (in our case ADR 37/00 for cars from 1986-1996). Matt's a no bullshit kind of guy and knows what it takes to pass the test so please take his word as gospel and listen to his recommendations. cheers, Rob.

Wish there was a way to test it locally as its a long drive from southern highlands to Penrith or Botany then if it fails to do it all again several if there was some way of testing it here I could rectify everything step by step and see what makes it pass as it is a expensive process to Change Cat,plugs, leads, oil, Filters, clean injectors,Filter and a tune all at one time.
Anyway thanks for the advice and The Hitman in Penrith is a great plug but a golden tip!
Will take all the advice on board ad start pricing up a cat any idea on what I should pay or the cheapest place to buy?
Also willing to get others point of view aswell

For a turbo car get a high flow Catco or Magnaflow ceramic core cat converter (SteelCat has a metal core if you want to go that way). $200 will buy you a high flow cat easy, for example

Mine is a Catco and did the job for emissions even with a bigger turbo, bigger cams and oversize valves etc.

If you've got a stock ECU, AFM, injectors and fit a brand new cat it would pass piss easy so I wouldnt worry too much about it. If it fails, you know who to go and see as to why.
