okay so here is my problem.....

im just finishing off my gk sigma. Its got a 6 bolt narrow block galant vr4 4g63 engine in it. Im running a borg warner bell housing (sandwich plate then mounted to W58.. not important) note im running the backing/cover plate off an evo 1-3 which lined up perfectly in regards to dowel locaters, starter motor holes and engine to bell housing bolts. Im running a narrow block flywheel ie off a galant gsr (6 bolt 4g63 fwd).

Okay so here is the problem i just got a starter motor for it... its listed to suit 4g63, i bolted it up and........ you can just here the starter turning. Un bolted it tested it on the bench.. all good the gear comes forwards all the way and spins no dramas. I then had the box out cause its getting rebuilt and lined up the starter on the flywheel and from what i can see, it comes out far enough but is about 6mm to far away from the ring gear!!! so yeah obviously not gonna work..... have been told there is a difference between auto and manual starter but have worked out they only differ in regards to how far the gear actually comes out and not the actual placement of it.

So yeah got no fu#@ing idea what to do now.... really wanna get my car on the road... Definitely not a wideblock engine, had a wide block flywheel doesn't even fit in the bell housing..... please some one shed some info on whats going on.........

from memory there is long and short nose starters

maybe try and look for some l300 ones - sb-se had a few different types

might be worth a shot
 
Keep in mind FWD and AWD flywheels have different ring gears.
The FWD flywheels are larger in diam (entire flywheel)
From memory, its about 1-2 cm's different.

But in your case, the bellhousing fits over the flywheel so that shouldn't really be the problem unless you have an AWD flywheel which isn't making contact with the starter motor???

A long shot.. otherwise the nose of the starter being short sounds more of a possibility.
 
Hmm I was told it was a fwd flywheel, but yeah maybe it's not... Any idea on the sizes???
 
Been caught on this myself when i put a vr4 engine in my mgb with a sigma jap spec narrow gearbox.fwd flywheels are about 10 to 20mm smaller than rear wheel drive narrow boltup flywheels,about the depth of the teeth.because your a 6bolt motor then fit a sigma narrow flywheel and just cut the dowl pin of the crank.This will only give you a 215mm clutch though.

I used a Magna Tn to Tp flywheel,the ones that use the km210 gearbox.they have the same size ringgear as rear wheel drive narrow boltup which is recessed but the main flywheel is bigger So they can use a 225mm clutch out of sigma aus spec.and fits in the narrow boxes.All you have to do is machine a hole for a spigot bearing.Ive used this setup for 10years now.
 
Try loosening the starter motor or tightening it so it lines up. Had a problem where I would crank and it made a loud noise. Had to loosen or tighten to line it up properly. Try that
