High ratio first and second gear

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

I haven't dealt with them before Brian, but those shafts and gears look stock, In fact I'm sure they have changed the cogs on the input shaft so I counted the teeth to make a comparison.
EVO 1 have:
36 tooth 1st gear and 14 teeth on the input shaft = 2.571
32 tooth 2nd gear and 20 teeth on the input shaft = 1.600

These racing ratios have (counted teeth in the pics):
Racing Gear Ratio Spec:
1ST = 2.400 = 36 tooth gear (same as EVO 1) with 15 teeth on the input shaft.
2ND = 1.476 = 31 tooth gear with 21 teeth on the input shaft.

Rob Barac might like those ratios for his FWD car for less wheel spin in 1st and 2nd :thumbsup:

I've used them before. They are good to deal with via email and was pretty fast post from Malaysia.

I bought one of the intake manifolds and it's great quality, can't fault it :)

to give you an idea I run a 2.75 1st and 1.68 2nd

with a 4.933 final drive (gsr diffs 3.5) @ 7000 rpm I get 61kmh in 1st and 100 in 2nd

or at 8000rpm its 70kmh and 114kmh

George, what size tyre diameter you running?

Brian, this might help you in some way if calculating what the Speedgear 1st and 2nd gears will get you out of 1st and 2nd using different transmissions and final drives.

OH YES I FUKN DID!!! :lol:
NOTE - CALCULATIONS BASED ON MY 215/40/17 TYRE DIAMETER = 23.77":
CALCS ALSO BASED ON MAX 8,000 RPM LIMIT.
NOTE SPEEDS IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR, ALSO MPH HIGH IN 4TH GEAR FOR THOSE WITH 1/4 MILE TIMES IN MIND.

PPG tall drag set ratios http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/page.asp?productid=24 )

EDIT: As per George's comment below.
They have their own centre diff and intermediate shaft tooth count differences (primary ratio) and it means their gears are calculated accordingly to what ends up being their final ratio.
Not sure of what the PPG drag set centre diff housing tooth count is (26?), 3rd gear intermediate (20?)
Cant calculate it without the exact numbers unfortunately.

nah your calcs are off a bit there rob, I run the ppg drag set, they don't take into account the final drive difference with the ratios

got a price today...950usd plus 40usd for shipping. Still waiting for more info ...what are they made of....where...and availability

$1000US is pretty pricey Brian. Then when shipped here into $AU and customs fees :unsure:
I guess you've already considered mixing and matching what's available in the OEM range to get more km/h out of first and second gears already?
It's those little differences that can mean a lot in competition I know - and knowing you, you've nutted it out already lol

Ive hit him up at 925usd posted ...see where that goes.{It will then scrape in under 1k aud.} Yes mate Ive looked around for a while to get some closer ratios and have done a bit of research over the years as to where I want it to be...this isnt perfect but at least I can throw these into an evo 3 box which will have better synchros than a one box that I was going to use..... and hopefully take a bit more punishment. Plus second will be a usable gear...

You can put EVO 3 double synchro 3rd and 4th gears into an EVO 1 box :)
Mated up to a GSR crown and pinion theoretically it'll get you over 70kmh in first gear and around 115kmh in 2nd gear depending on your tyre diameter.
(which coincidentally is what the Speedgear ratios will give you if you were using an EVO crownwheel and pinion. If using Speedgear ratios with a GSR crownwheel it'll get you more legs out of 1st and 2nd - which is probably what you would want to do :)

Are you serious George or are you fucking with me?? lol :lol:
The PPG 'drag ratios' end up being the same 1st to 5th gear ratios as normal EVO 2 and EVO 3!!!!
Which is extremely very difficult to match to 2 decimal places when you're using different tooth counts - you're fucking with me aren't you? lol
If it is true, they are cleverly hidden on PPG website by not showing the final ratio.
So here they are anyway.... :huh:

A bit of sample motec gps data from eastern creek last year with 255/40-17 tyres

random revs etc but just grabbing it off data

2nd = 96kmh @ 7086rpm
3rd = 150.3kmh @ 7327rpm
4th = 196.3kmh @ 6961rpm
5th = 257.4kmh @ 6486rpm

Those speeds at rpms pretty much fall in line with the EVO/PPG gears with GSR diffs :)
257kmh = cool. Is that the quickest you've had it in 5th?
Have you considered going to a 0.666 GSR 5th gear ratio to bring the gap between 4th to 5th just that little bit closer together?

Sorry Brian. Probably filling your thread with this extra info but I hope some of it may be useful to you :thumbsup:
Im not sure if anyone on here has used Speedgear products yet, but its nice to know there are options out there.

yeah that's the fastest I have had it so far, I am aiming to get to phillip island in a few weeks which I guess will
see me around 270-280kmh.

I don't really want the shorter 5th as I like the legs in 5th but ppg don't make a gsr one anyway so im out of luck lol

ideally id like a taller 1st,2nd and 3rd
